Duties:

Food Service Workers support the day-to-day operations of VIU's food service outlets by providing customer service, cash handling, food service support, and maintaining clean and well-stocked service areas. This role operates in a high-volume environment and plays a key part in delivering a positive experience to students, staff, and visitors.

  • Provide front-line customer service in a high-volume cafeteria environment, including engaging with customers, responding to inquiries or concerns, and supporting sales through product knowledge and suggestive selling
  • Process transactions using a computerized point-of-sale system, handle cash and electronic payments accurately, and support opening and closing procedures including cash balancing
  • Support food service operations by portioning food, replenishing food and beverage stations, and assisting with service activities as directed
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of servery, dining areas, and equipment, including operating dishwashing equipment
  • Receive, stock, rotate, and merchandise products, ensuring service areas are organized, stocked, and visually maintained
  • Assist with the setup, service, delivery, and cleanup of catering events as required

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum one year of recent related experience in a food service or customer service environment
  • Experience operating a computerized point-of-sale system
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service in a high-volume setting
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
  • FoodSafe Level I and Serving It Right

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in institutional or campus food service

  • Catering or event service experience

  • Experience with merchandising and product display
