Who are we looking for? We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to join our team as the Business Group Leader for the Canadian Energy Business Group. Aligning with our Future Energy initiative and our market strategy, in this pivotal role, you will guide and grow GHD’s presence and innovation in traditional and renewable energy sectors across Canada.

As the Business Group Leader – Canadian Energy , you will collaborate with Client Relationship Managers, Market Leaders, Canadian Region Operations Managers, Regional General Managers, and other senior leaders in identifying client and project opportunities and building a best-in-class delivery team across multidisciplinary projects, bids, and proposals. The role will provide leadership in developing and delivering a range of projects, leading and mentoring a team of scientists, engineers and technical specialists, and managing overall group performance.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in: Strategic Leadership:

  • Provide vision and direction for Canada’s Energy sector that aligns with GHD’s Future Energy initiative and contributes to the North American and Canadian market strategies.
  • Business Planning: In consultation with our stakeholders and senior leadership, develop a business plan, ensuring alignment with our strategy and client programs. Recommend financial and headcount budgets; propose business targets, for example, revenues or other key performance indicators (KPIs); and schedule key activities/projects, ensuring integration with other elements of the organization.
  • Leadership and Direction: Identify and communicate the actions needed to implement the strategy and business plan; explain the relationship to the broader organization's mission, vision, and values; motivate people to commit to these tenets and bring innovative ideas to achieve our business goals.
  • Business Development: Identify, position, develop and implement client, program and project opportunities to ensure sustainable growth and financial performance for the Energy Group.
  • Organizational Capability Building: Evaluate the capabilities of staff within the group and broader organization to identify gaps and prioritize development activities and recruitment. Implement the organization's career development frameworks within the area of responsibility. Coach and mentor others to support the development of the organization's talent pool.
  • Strategy Formation and Implementation: Develop tactical plans for optimizing resources and assets being managed within a significant area or department.
  • Health & Safety: Provide safety leadership to the regions and teams and work with staff to continuously improve safety performance across the business.
  • Improvement/Innovation: Initiate, formulate, and implement new/improved business practices within the energy and resources discipline and contributing to enhancements/maturity of our existing enterprise programs and frameworks.
  • Financial Management and Control: Manage and be accountable for meeting established metrics for the team’s portfolio and financial performance and growth objectives.
  • Performance Management: Manage and report on performance within the business group across the team of teams; set appropriate performance objectives for direct reports and hold individuals accountable for achieving them; take appropriate corrective action where necessary to ensure the achievement of annual business objectives across the team.
  • Corporate Representation: Identify and have team presence at industry, institutional, and/or professional forums, boards, and committees, in order to promote the company brand or efforts. May involve preparation of presentations and materials for professional partnering meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Identify and manage stakeholders up to and including management level, finding out their needs, issues, and concerns and leading and coordinating the development of stakeholder engagement plans to support the communication of business information, decisions, and outcomes.
  • Customer Relationship Development / Prospecting: Develop and implement a relationship management plan for strategic, complex potential accounts to build key relationships at local and national levels. Coordinate the engagement between local, regional, national, market and sector teams with our clients to ensure effective flow of information and resolution of issues.
  • Brand Strategy and Effectiveness: Serve as ambassador for the essence of the brand and/or maintain a portfolio of brands, defining the measures used to determine brand effectiveness and using the results to inform future activities.
  • Corporate Strategy Shaping: Participate in the development of corporate strategy, applying functional expertise to test the viability of the strategy and contributing creative ideas and insights to support the strategy formation process.
  • Lead by Example: focus on clients, winning work and efficient delivery at all times.

Education

  • Engineering degree

What you bring to the team:

  • Professional Qualification – P.Eng.., (PMP an asset)
  • Sound understanding of market trends and the ability to adapt business strategies to changing client needs and industry developments.
  • A technical background in energy (including nuclear, sustainable, renewable and power utility) engineering.
  • Strong client relationship management skills, with the ability to build and maintain lasting partnerships based on trust and delivery excellence.
  • Robust business acumen, including strategic thinking and the capacity to align business initiatives with organizational goals.
  • Experience in developing and implementing business strategies that drive growth, profitability, and competitive advantage.
  • Proven ability to identify and capitalize on new client opportunities, contributing to sustainable business development.
  • Excellent networking and interpersonal skills for engaging with clients at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Demonstrated capability in client prospecting, relationship management, and coordinating cross-functional teams to resolve client issues effectively.
  • Recognized project management professional with the authority and reputation to effectively guide and influence leaders and staff.
  • Minimum of 8 to 15 years of progressive project management experience, including leading multi-disciplinary teams on complex, large-scale projects.
  • At least 8 years of hands-on experience managing energy-related projects for public, private, and/or industrial clients, with consulting engineering or design background and direct involvement with contracting partners or clients.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in managing financial key performance indicators (KPIs), such as utilization, labor revenue, variances, full-time equivalents (FTEs), sell rate, salary rate, work-in-progress (WIP), collections, and backlog, along with the ability to develop and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Experience and knowledge of various project delivery contracts and commercial frameworks.
  • Ability to make and communicate difficult decisions promptly and effectively.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusion and diversity within teams and projects.
  • Track record of developing, mentoring, and leading professionals and technical staff.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset, dedicated to achieving successful outcomes for clients.

The candidate can sit anywhere in Ontario or Western Canada that GHD has an office. The salary will be based on location, skills, and experience Salary Range: $148,000 to $272,800
