Your Opportunity
The role of a junior civil engineer is to work as a team member with intermediate and senior engineers as part of project teams of all sizes. You should be able to evaluate, select, specify, and engineer systems or products for a project. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include calculations, field work, coordination of tasks, and meeting attendance and recording.
In general, this role will assist more senior engineers/designers by performing the routine aspects of civil engineering assignments and may assist in the analysis of proposed projects.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Perform civil engineering design which may include engineering drawings, hydraulic system calculations, pipe design calculations, engineering reports, design criteria, and prepare applications for regulatory agencies.
- Assist in the preparation of engineering project documents, client presentations, client contact and communication pertaining to specific project deliverables.
- Attend and assist in client, contractor, stakeholder, and regulatory agency meetings to gain a better understanding of client’s goals, project requirements, site assessments, key challenges, coordination.
- Assist in the development of design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
- Recognize when technical problems are developing and initiate appropriate corrective actions.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
- Assist with the development of job specific discipline specifications.
- Assist in the review of shop drawings and submittals, responds to request for information, prepares site observation reports, and performs other contract administration tasks.
- Assist in the evaluation and selection of civil systems and materials.
- Participate in value engineering and basic cost estimating.
- May conduct construction inspection services and may assist with construction contract administration duties.
- Support the civil team in providing services during construction that can include submittal reviews, responses to requests for information and contract document clarifications.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- General understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, geotechnical, survey, storm water/drainage design, road design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
- Understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
- Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
- Working knowledge of codes, legal and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions and developing jurisdictional experience and contacts.
- Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as relevant discipline software programs.
- Knowledge and skill with AutoCAD, Civil3D, PCSWMM, StormCAD, WaterCAD, (or other modeling software) is considered an asset.
- Take initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the design team.
- Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work efficiently and effectively within a team.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering. Working toward licensure as a Professional Engineer.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience
Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
