Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- General
- Assist in meal preparation, including salads, desserts, and any additional prep work as directed by Cook and/or the Food Services Manager.
- Prepare meals adhering to specific dietary requirements and restrictions.
- Support the Cook by stepping in as necessary, ensuring consistent, quality food preparation.
- Ensure that all food and products are consistently prepared and served according to recipes, portion control, cooking and serving standards.
- Prepare and serve attractive, nutritious meals, according to the prepared menu plans and in accordance with applicable food service and Canada’s Food Guide.
- Adapt work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services.
- Make use of and decide on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste.
- Inventory Management
- Participate in the receipt and proper storage of food shipments and deliveries.
- Conduct routine inventory checks of dry goods, refrigeration, and freezer storage units.
- Assist with the organized storage of leftover food after meals, implementing correct labeling and dating procedures to maintain food safety.
- Cleaning & Sanitation:
- Contribute to the overall cleanliness and sanitation of the kitchen, food supply areas, staff kitchen, and dry goods room.
- Perform end-of-week deep cleaning tasks to uphold hygiene standards.
Soak cooking and preparation dishes post-use for thorough cleansing. - Store cleaned and dried pots and pans in their designated locations.
- Serving & Miscellaneous Tasks
- Assist in the serving of meals to ensure a smooth dining experience.
- Help in lifting and transporting heavy food items from ovens and storage areas.
- Aid the Cook in recording meals served for rental groups for accurate record-keeping.
- Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Food Services Manager, demonstrating versatility and adaptability in a dynamic kitchen environment.
- Supervision
- Provides direction and supervision to volunteers working in the ‘Pantry and Kitchen’ areas.
- Oversee and support scheduled volunteers, demonstrate work methods, and ensure they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
- Demonstrate work methods to volunteers.
- Health and Safety:
- Ensure that daily temperatures are recorded for the sterile refrigerator and freezer, they are up to date for inspection.
- Maintain cleanliness of all equipment, drawers, and cupboards and clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, and utensils etc.
- Responsible for all cleaning and sanitizing procedures in accordance with Public Health etc.
- Follow guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitor practices to ensure adherence.
- Monitor and maintain kitchen equipment, report any equipment issues to supervisor.
- Maintain sanitation, hygiene, health and safety standards and safe handling of foods while performing duties.
- Adhere to fire and health and safety standards pertaining to the kitchen and other areas of the facility.
- Report to the supervisor new equipment that is required or broken equipment, which needs to be repaired or replaced.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other position related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This position is considered casual/relief with no guaranteed hours
- Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – availability to be called into work is required for 1:00 pm to 6:00pm, or 10:00 am to 6:00 pm as needed, seven days a week.
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a standing position for periods of time and regularly lift up to 20lbs and occasionally up to 40lbs
- May deal with clients who become angry.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completed Secondary School
- Food Handlers Certificate is required
- Cook’s papers, one (1) year course would be an asset.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience
- Experience in meal planning within a budget.
- Experience with nutritional needs of seniors and the homeless population.
- Good knowledge of nutrition and safe food handling.
- Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics.
- Ability to operate standard cleaning equipment and perform related tasks
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Able to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member.
- Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
