Position summary

Under the supervision of the Associate Director of CMARC Operations, the Animal Care Manager manages the daily operations, logistics and administration of the animal care program. Ensures that the facility meets high standards of quality, is in compliance with best practices, SOPs, university policies, and CCAC guidelines governing the care and use of animals in research. Responsible for client service, facility inspections, safety programs and compliance. Directly manages and provides training to facility employees, and participates in their hiring and training.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manages, the facility operation and a team of Animal Attendants and other MUNACA positions , and promotes the philosophy and the values of the department.
  • Regularly inspects facility to ensure an efficient operation providing the highest quality of animal care and required sanitation standards in compliance with SOPs, university policies and CCAC guidelines.
  • Collaborates with veterinary services staff to assure health and welfare of animals.
  • Interacts with research staff to understand and meet their needs.
  • Oversees record keeping for the animal care program (animal room logs, census, maintenance logs, etc.).
  • Ensures facility and equipment maintenance meets operational standards.
  • Using metrics, regularly reviews needs and makes recommendations for staffing and equipment and/or services.
  • Directly supervises a large team of 10 – 20 Animal Attendants, and other MUNACA positions. Trains, orients and mentors facility employees and research staff. Participates in hiring process with HR administrator, creates schedule (24/7) approves absences and vacation. Verifies work and workflow in the team. Perform activities related to performance assessment, makes recommendation on trial /probation period.
  • Attends meetings related to disputes or grievances with the union and representatives.
  • Trains employees or refers to appropriate safety programs are followed.
  • Oversees animal facility security.
  • Responsible for inventory, procurement, repair and maintenance of animal care equipment.
  • Inspects regularly animal facilities to ensure proper maintenance of infrastructure.

  • Demonstrating the ability to manage workload with existing resources, maximizing process efficiency, and most importantly, changing daily priorities/tasks.
  • Striving to make process improvements.
  • Effectively managing and meeting deadlines.
  • Mobilizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Facilitating change and improvements.
  • Key player in keeping emotions under control, and using de-escalation as a primary method to decrease tension at work.
  • Oversees the construction and renovation of animal facilities.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Knowledge of health surveillance, quality assurance, and barrier facility practices, programs, and procedures for maintaining facility's designated health status. Knowledge of proper installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of animal research equipment. Knowledge and understanding of regulations, guidelines, and standards for the care of laboratory animals.
