Junior to Mid Level Family Law/Litigation Associate
About the role
The Vancouver office of DLA Piper (Canada) LLP is looking for a talented mid to senior associate with 2-5 years’ experience in family law/litigation and good understanding of financial issues. The successful candidate will work on a variety of family law litigation and alternate dispute resolution matters for our clients, supported by a busy and talented team. You will be a self-starter who is looking to apply strong and proven legal skills in our collegial and high functioning group. You will be a proven team-player who enjoys collaborating with others but who is also comfortable running with a family law or related litigation file.
Specifically, the successful candidate’s skills and experience will include:
- Solid experience managing family law files and related litigation matters with minimal supervision, including the ability to move files forward in a timely and strategic manner both independently and as a team member;
- Familiarity with relevant court rules, filings, processes, and strong advocacy skills;
- Experience in dispute resolution processes and strong dispute resolution skills;
- Experience in drafting of marriage and separation agreements, and calculation of support obligations;
- Excellent drafting abilities, with a focus on precision, clarity, and attention to detail;
- Strong interpersonal and client‑communication skills, ideally with experience advising clients in emotionally sensitive situations; and
- Experience working with clients from a variety of industries and backgrounds.
You will have the opportunity to develop a varied practice, dispute resolution and advocacy skills in key areas of the firm’s litigation and alternate dispute resolution work, which may include: family law disputes (including complex financial issues include support and property division, and parenting issues), general commercial litigation, and related contested matters.
