Are you a dependable and safety-focused professional looking for flexible, hands-on work in a dynamic facility environment? We are currently seeking Auxiliary Operations Workers to support the day-to-day ice-making and operation of our facility. In this on-call role, you will assist with a variety of tasks including ice maintenance, mechanical systems support, custodial duties, and event conversions. You will work both independently and as part of a team to ensure the facility is safe, clean, and operating efficiently for staff, users, and the community. This is a great opportunity for someone with technical skills and a strong customer service mindset looking to contribute in a flexible, as-needed capacity.

Job Summary

  • Responsible as assigned for maintaining and operating the facility and related equipment/assets in a safe and efficient manner
  • Monitors and operates refrigeration, mechanical and ice making equipment/systems
  • Performs repairs and maintenance as assigned and within (when applicable) the permissions of individual certification(s)
  • Responds to on-demand service calls and proactively engages in core work assignments related to facility, equipment and/or asset maintenance
  • Liaises with internal, external and partner stakeholders proactively and as assigned
  • Responsible to ensure that all work performed is done in a safe, responsible and respectful manner, ensuring outstanding customer service and guest experience as core deliverables

Examples of Work

  • Operates the facility as assigned, and in a safe and efficient manner

  • Monitors, and as required operates equipment and direct digital controls (DDC) systems related to refrigeration, mechanical/HVAC, lighting and other building controls/systems as assigned

  • Performs minor and/or routine maintenance and repair throughout the facility, including equipment and assets

  • Responds to facility, equipment and/or asset issues, prioritizing work in order to maintain a safe environment for staff and users

  • Safely operates, maintains and services ice resurfacers and ice making equipment

  • Inspects, maintains and services sport and field-of-play equipment as required

  • Maintains and delivers first-class ice conditions specific to the needs of each program and/or sport

  • When applicable, participates in ice in/out procedures and sport/logo application/removal

  • Monitors, and as required operates the refrigeration ice plant in a safe and efficient manner

  • Keeps accurate records, including, but not limited to daily logs, equipment usage reports, maintenance records and incident reporting

  • Uses computer applications as required

  • Drives vehicles as required and/or assigned, including (but not limited to) ice resurfacers, maintenance & utility vehicles, forklifts, scissor lifts and boom lifts

  • Performs facility and equipment conversions as required

  • Assists event and frontline services as required

  • Performs custodial/cleaning duties as required and/or assigned

  • Communicates with and assists contractors and external service providers as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Certification issued by Technical Safety British Columbia (TSBC) - minimum Ice Facility Operator (IFO)
    • Refrigeration Operator (RO) or 4th Class Power Engineer certifications are an asset
  • BC Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Safe and skilled ice resurfacer operator
  • Safe and skilled knowledge and ability in all aspects of ice making
  • Operating knowledge and ability to use all types of building maintenance equipment
  • Ability to safely perform ongoing physical aspects of the job
  • Proficient with computers and capable to operate DDC systems related to refrigeration, HVAC/mechanical and lighting
  • Excellent oral & written language skills, with ability to perform and maintain accurate reports, logs and other critical communications as required
  • Ability to communicate and deliver outstanding customer service/experience to all stakeholders
  • Ability to perform and thrive independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to complete and maintain a successful criminal record check
  • All qualifications listed must be maintained in good standing during the life of employment

  • Experience working with high performance athletes and local sporting organizations

Hours of work: Length and number of shifts vary based on operational needs. Hours of operations are 5:30am-2:00am daily.

Compensation: Hourly rate is dependent on certificate held as per the collective agreement.

  • IFO - $33.36
  • RO - $35.63
  • 4th Class - $39.32

Additional 12% in-lieu of benefits that increases to 16% after 1000 hours of work.
