Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Automation & Controls Specialist to join the Instrumentation & Control team at Next Hydrogen's facility in Mississauga, Ontario.
Reporting to the Instrumentation & Control team, this role is responsible for the development, programming, commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement of industrial automation and control systems supporting Next Hydrogen's electrolyzer technology. Working primarily with Siemens PLCs, WinCC Unified HMIs, and industrial instrumentation, the successful candidate will support projects from design through commissioning while ensuring reliable and efficient operation of automated systems.
Key Responsibilities
Develop, modify, and maintain Siemens PLC software using TIA Portal. Program, troubleshoot, and optimize Siemens S7-1200 and S7-1500 PLC systems. Develop reusable PLC software libraries and standardized control modules. Perform PLC software testing, simulation, debugging, and validation. Design, develop, and maintain operator interfaces using Siemens WinCC Unified. Configure alarms, trends, event logging, and intuitive HMI navigation. Integrate PLC and HMI systems with industrial communication networks. Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, and plant start-up activities. Troubleshoot and resolve automation and control system issues during commissioning and ongoing operations. Test, calibrate, inspect, and commission field instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, flow, and level instrumentation, as well as on/off and control valves. Perform loop checks, functional testing, and instrumentation troubleshooting. Support software modifications through established change management processes. Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and operations teams to support continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline. 3-5+ years of experience in industrial automation and control systems. Hands-on experience programming Siemens PLCs using TIA Portal. Experience developing HMIs using Siemens WinCC Unified. Experience troubleshooting industrial control systems and automation equipment. Experience with process instrumentation, calibration, and commissioning activities. Experience supporting FAT, SAT, and plant commissioning. Experience within manufacturing, industrial processing, oil & gas, chemical processing, water treatment, hydrogen, or similar industrial environments is considered an asset. Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% to customer sites and company facilities to support commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and field service activities.
