Canadian Biojet Fuel Laboratories (CBFL), a division of Greenfield Global is looking for a Technical Operations Manager to join our growing team.
Position Overview
The Technical Operations Manager will support Canadian Biojet Fuel Laboratories’ (CBFL) Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) pilot operations to advance CBFL’s Mixed-Alcohol-To-Jet (MATJ) and Fischer–Tropsch (FT) pathways toward ASTM-compatible fully synthetic aviation fuel in a timely, efficient and safe manner. It is a key role in this development involves the design, fabrication and operation of pilot plants and in future demonstration plant that will provide the learnings necessary to build full scale commercial plants. It is a hybrid of technical design of pilot/demo plants and the safe and efficient operation of these plants to gain the technical knowledge and solid proof to design the commercial plant. Necessarily there will a strong need for continuous improvement of all processes with the ability to shift focus as technical knowledge is gained.
This role bridges engineering and operations, ensuring that we obtain the learnings we need from the pilot/demo systems in a safely operated, well organized and well maintained as efficiently and quickly as possible. This position needs to work in a team environment with all disciplines, both internal and external and occasional travel to partner facilities (e.g., University of Alberta) may be required for commissioning support and technical alignment.
Work Environment & Schedule
This role is a hybrid role with a portion on-site at CBFL’s Sarnia Research Park pilot facility to lead the engineers, operators and maintenance team from Lambton College. The amount of time required at the Research Park will vary as the needs arise. The remainder of time will be offsite for design and administrative focus time. General expectation is 2-3 days onsite a week and 2-3 days remote but this will vary depending on the needs of the overall development such as additional time onsite may be required during construction, training and commissioning phases of the pilot /demo plants.
This position will provide mentoring and leadership to the pilot plant process engineers so that their contribution grows in proportion to the overall development needs and will require communication during off-hours to support 24/7 pilot plant operation as required.

Who You Are:
- Bachelor’s degree (or greater) in Chemical Engineering with Professional Engineer designation.
- Knowledge of process simulation tools (Aspen Plus/HYSYS or equivalent) with a strong competency in mass/energy balances.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze process data (e.g., Python, Excel, PI historian tools) and translate results into operational improvements.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write clear technical reports and work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Your Experience Should Include
- 15+ years of process engineering and/or chemical plant operations experience in fuels, petrochemicals, refining, catalysis, or related process industries.
- Experience leading troubleshooting efforts and training a team of operators on new equipment in an operating petrochemical plant in Ontario is preferred.
- Experience designing processes to integrate into existing systems on small and large scale and to use operational learnings to ensure continuous improvement.
- Strong safety mindset and experience working within Process Safety Management frameworks (HAZOP/MOC).
Job Responsibilities:
- Comply with all company health and safety, and environmental policies and regulatory requirements
- Foster a team-based culture with established objectives and priorities
- Provide process engineering leadership for pilot plant operations, optimization, and continuous improvement of CBFL’s MATJ multi-stage pilot systems (and related SAF development assets).
- Play an active role in plant expansions, future plant designs, including scope development, design review, commissioning, and start-up.
- Responsible for ensuring operating team has the tools and training needed to safely perform their duties.
- Support shift teams and coordinators with data interpretation, SOP alignment and technical guidance.
- Champion operational discipline, competence validation and consistent execution of operating procedures.
- Ensure maintenance of accurate engineering documentation, P&IDs, mass balances, process models through MOC system.
- Play an active role in plant expansions, including scope development, design review, commissioning, and start-up.
- Prioritize and manage technical initiatives based on risk, return, and operational need.
- Coordinate with the Analytical team to establish the experiment order, timeline and goals
- Coordinate with maintenance team to perform checks between campaigns with additional checks required prior to longer campaigns for increased reliability.
- Contribute to commercialization readiness by identifying scale-up risks, defining equipment needs, supporting demonstration-plant design inputs, and documenting learnings.
- Arrange for 3rd party reviews of the system as changes are made. Including but not limited to: TSSA, ESA, CSA, engineering firms and insurance providers.
- Conduct documented performance reviews with direct reports and follow-ups as required for objectives and opportunities
- Assist/engage with grant applications and work with the team to ensure the objectives and reporting requirement of all grants are successfully completed.
As part of the continuous improvement needs, lead incident investigations and root cause analysis pertaining to plant outages and equipment damage and use this knowledge for the best scale up design.
Total Compensation & Care:
- Base salary dependent on experience and demonstrated performance – $135,000 - $165,000
