The salary range represents the minimum and maximum salary for the position. Employees are usually hired between the minimum and mid-point of the salary range.

Our Board of Directors is composed of 12 elected Student Executives and Student Councilors from each of the different Schools at BCIT.

The Opportunity:

The Sales Associate is responsible for providing exceptional customer service and retail support at BCIT Student Association’s retail locations. This includes assisting customers with apparel and merchandise, managing inventory, making specialty drinks, preparing food items, cleaning, opening and closing duties, processing transactions, and supporting store operations. The Sales Associate plays an important role in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, while embodying BCITSA’s equity, diversity, and inclusion values in all customer and team interactions.

What You Will Do:

Customer Service Standards:

  • Greet and acknowledge all customers, offer assistance and be responsive to customer inquiries
  • Engage with customers to understand their needs and recommend products accordingly
  • Actively promote products and specials to customers including specialty drinks
  • Perform related administrative duties such as answering phone calls
  • Address customer inquiries and complaints professionally, escalating to the management or when needed
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current stock, trends, promotions, and store events
  • Perform a full cycle of transactions efficiently and accurately including applying discounts and exchanging or refunding products
  • Create drinks according to recipe and customer preferences
  • Represent the BCITSA retail brand professionally and provide consistent customer experience at all event locations

Merchandising & Inventory:

  • Ensure merchandise is well-stocked, neatly displayed, and tagged according to visual merchandising standards
  • Participate in receiving, unpacking, and tagging inventory shipments
  • Conduct inventory counts and assist in loss prevention efforts
  • Write off or return damaged, outdated, or unsellable merchandise as instructed by management

Operational Duties:

  • Follow all store opening and closing procedures, including cash handling and securing premises
  • Maintain a professional appearance and adhere to the store dress code
  • Open and close the store including activating/deactivating alarms and securing the premises.
  • Maintain communication with the manager regarding shift activities, operational concerns, or incidents during shifts.
  • Support and participate in external events and pop-up store setups as required, including transporting merchandise, setting up displays, and providing customer service on-site
  • Assist in the packing, transport, and restocking of inventory before and after events.
  • Ensure store appearance follows BCITSA standards
  • Follow all procedures including daily cleaning and maintenance of the store.
  • Operating a POS system and processing transactions
  • Monitor and process e-store purchases, including preparing packages for pickup and shipping
  • Operate beverage equipment such as espresso machines, blenders, and drip coffee makers safely and efficiently
  • Heat or bake food items following proper food safety procedures
  • Communicating any issues to the manager regarding fulfilling orders.

About You

With a proactive, engaging attitude you are someone who promotes customer service, teamwork, and communication in line with our culture and objectives. You are positive, customer-orientated, and resourceful in your abilities to support the operation of BCITSA Retail Services.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Grade 10 or equivalent
  • Previous experience in retail is considered an asset

Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Ability to use POS systems, inventory software, and Microsoft 365 tools effectively
  • Proficient in the English language (verbal & written) with strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Build knowledge of retail products to effectively sell and address customer needs
  • Develop and maintain a good knowledge of campus layout, building names and BCITSA services, in order to provide directions to students and visitors
  • Ability to focus attention on customer's needs, remaining calm and courteous at all times
  • Previous customer related experience an asset
  • Ability to prepare food and beverages consistently using established recipes and portion guidelines
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn safe food handling practices and allergen awareness
  • Experience using espresso machines, ovens, or other kitchen equipment is considered an asset

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be flexible in terms of scheduling, including weekends and peak retail periods as required
  • Able to lift and carry up to 11kg (25lbs), bend, crouch, climb, and walk and stand for long periods; pull a cart with some supplies, recycled cardboard etc.
  • Must be able to perform cleaning duties, such as mopping and sweeping floors, and cleaning counters
  • This position is required to perform repetitive movements
