Grey Roots Museum & Archives is recruiting a Student Museum Assistant - Kids Programming for the summer. This job posting is for an existing vacancy.

The start date for this position will be based on the successful candidate's availability.

Purpose

Grey Roots Museum and Archives is a 40,000 square foot facility with six exhibit galleries, four of which house travelling exhibits from other museums and temporary exhibits from our own collection. We feature Moreston Heritage Village, with twelve period buildings filled with period and time-appropriate artefacts, and these buildings are publicly accessible to visitors from May through September each year. Grey Roots offers numerous special events and community programs, especially during the summer months.

The Museum and Archives Summer student will be trained in a variety of positions and departments around Grey Roots to support summer operations and gain a wide breadth of experience in public facing roles and museum operations.

Responsibilities

Kids and Family Programming

  • Interact with visitors via lively and engaging museum programs.
  • Deliver tours, activities and demonstrations throughout Grey Roots Museum wearing an historic costume or museum uniform.
  • Deliver specialized programming for school groups, children’s programming and adult and general groups.
  • Assist with exhibit research, artefact handling and exhibit set up and take down.
  • Contribute to the delivery of special events and related programming.
  • Assist in the marketing of the site and its programming by contributing social media content.

Visitor Services

  • Support Visitor Services by greeting visitors (in person, on phone, by email/online), providing timely information and answering general questions about Grey Roots Museum & Archives and Grey County Tourism.
  • Perform daily opening and closing procedures of the facility.
  • Complete transactions on the POS; handle credit/debit/cash.
  • Proactively assist all visitors with museum merchandise sales.
  • Liaise with appropriate Grey Roots staff to achieve resolutions to visitor issues.
  • Other duties as required.

Other Duties

  • Maintains skills at a high level. Participates in training and development as suggested and arranged by staff at Grey Roots and Grey County.
  • Responsible as an employee for Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Participates in other related Grey Roots activities as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position will appeal to outgoing and enthusiastic youth who enjoy public speaking, interacting with the public and have an interest in history, education, theatre, arts, performing, and tourism.

In this position, you can expect to deliver interpretive programs, tours, demonstrations and activities of Grey Roots Museum and Moreston Heritage Village to schools, children, adult groups and general visitors.

This position researches life in the 19th and early 20th centuries in Grey County in order to become knowledgeable of the history and geography of the communities within Grey.

Assists in Grey Roots special events and programming as needed.

Most work will be in the full view of the public in Grey Roots Museum. This position will work with visitors of all ages and will involve public speaking and presentation.

This position will be trained in all of the above areas and rotate between work assignments throughout the summer. Hours of work vary according to operating hours of the museum including weekends, and is subject to evening hours.

Grey Roots Museum & Archives is located on Grey Rd 18 surrounded by farmland. The remote location is approximately 8km from downtown Owen Sound and not accessible by public transportation. Successful applicants will need to have their own vehicle or arrange transportation to the museum. We do not recommend biking to work.

Works cooperatively with the Manager of Museum & Archives, Grey Roots staff and volunteers, relevant Grey County administrative staff.

External Working Relationships

Grey Roots visitors and members, general public, suppliers.

Knowledge and Skill

  • A student, returning school in the upcoming academic year working towards a post-secondary diploma/degree in museum studies, education, theatre, acting or music performance, tourism, communications, or related field. Recently graduated students will also be considered.
  • Experience working with the public, especially with children, is considered an asset.
  • Able to shift strategies and approaches in response to new information, challenges, or organizational needs.
  • Good organizational, time management, verbal and written communication skills, ability to prioritize, problem solve and handle multiple duties and interruptions effectively.
  • Excellent public speaking skills, creativity and research skills; ability to engage with visitors of all ages.
  • Friendly, outgoing, courteous personality
  • Previous customer service experience and training is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Ontario education curriculum is an asset.
  • Experience in sales and cash handling with knowledge of Point of Sale preferred.
  • Familiarity with the history and geography of the communities in Grey County would be an asset.

Impact of Error

If a visitor makes requests that are not dealt with in a prompt, friendly and accurate manner, the County’s image as a museum and archives, tourism attraction and / or destination will be tarnished, and loss of revenue from admissions and will result.

Failure to communicate effectively with the public and community groups could result in negative public relations, hence loss of revenue and goodwill.

Errors in cash receipts from admissions, room rentals and Museum Store could result in financial losses.
