About the role

Job Purpose As an EHS Specialist, you will support the plant by implementing environmental, health, and safety programs that meet corporate expectations and regulatory requirements. You will work closely with the Plant Manager, EHS Manager, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance and to strengthen both environmental performance and workplace safety.

A key part of the role includes maintaining and improving the plant’s Environmental Management System (EMS) while also leading the development, implementation, and auditing of safety and fire‑prevention programs. You will provide guidance to plant leadership and frontline teams to ensure consistent application of EHS standards and effective risk control across the site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise the Plant Manager, EH&S Manager, and site leadership on environmental compliance matters
  • Manage reporting for regulatory issues such as spills, releases, and emergencies in accordance with legal requirements
  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of the Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Ensure accurate environmental recordkeeping and routine reporting
  • Stay up-to-date on federal, provincial, and local environmental regulations
  • Interact with environmental regulatory bodies and participate in agency inspections
  • Schedule and conduct monitoring, sampling, and compliance testing of permitted processes and pollution control systems
  • Submit annual reports to relevant regulatory agencies
  • Support maintenance programs related to environmental permit requirements
  • Participate in environmental project planning and execution
  • Oversee waste management, recycling programs, and water quality monitoring/reporting
  • Support the EHS department with health and safety projects
  • Develop, implement, and routinely review fire‑prevention programs, procedures, and standards, including hazard assessments, training, documentation, and compliance with all applicable codes and regulations.
  • Oversee the inspection, testing, maintenance, and performance of all fire‑protection systems in the plant—such as alarms, sprinklers, suppression systems, hydrants, extinguishers, and fire pumps—while managing contractors, ensuring system reliability, and coordinating system upgrades or impairments.
  • Interpret and fire code requirements to plant management and staff.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments.
  • Take on additional responsibilities as needed.
  • Wear a respirator and perform duties involving climbing ladders when required.

What do I need to be successful?

  • 3–5 years of experience in the environmental field; industrial experience preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with safety programs.
  • Solid knowledge of applicable environmental regulations and standards including federal, provincial and local requirements.
  • Understanding of occupational health and safety and fire‑prevention regulations and standards, with the ability to apply them in operational settings.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and apply critical thinking
  • Solid time and resource management abilities Experience driving change and process improvements
  • Basic financial and budgeting knowledge

Education and Credentials

  • Post‑secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety and/or Environmental Science, such as a diploma, associate’s degree, or relevant certification.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and directly related experience will be considered.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field is an asset but not required.
  • First Aid training (Intermediate, Advanced) is considered an asset

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing plant environment with exposure to production equipment, varying temperatures and noise.
  • Requires use of appropriate personal protective equipment and regular presence on the plant floor.
