About the Department

Facilities - Maintenance includes all trade and grounds positions that work in school and administrative sites.

Additional Information

Note:

  • This position works outside in various weather conditions and temperatures and involves repeated physical movement and exertion.
  • Must obtain certification in TDG and WHMIS.
  • Must submit a current driver’s abstract.
  • Must be trained to operate an aerial lift truck.

Position Description

purpose
The purpose of the position is to install and maintain outdoor sports equipment, creative play structures, fences, car plug-in backings, signs, bike racks, concrete car bumpers, flag poles, etc. utilizing hand and power tools.

accountability
This position is accountable for ensuring that safe working procedures exist and are followed and adhered to at all times.

major responsibilities

  • Installs, repairs and inspects grounds fixtures such as fences, sports equipment, playground equipment, flagpoles, car plug-in backing, car bumpers, and signs.
  • Completes regular, scheduled inspections of playground and/or other equipment and completes reports as necessary.
  • Ensures that playground equipment, sports equipment, and other grounds fixtures are in a safe and operable condition.
  • Adheres to and enforces CSA recommendations concerning creative playgrounds and internal CBE standards and requirements.
  • Serves as a resource in the continual improvement of creative playground design, components, structure, and maintenance.
  • Ensures that installers of playground equipment maintain warranty obligations.
  • Ensures that work is performed in compliance with the requirements of Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and CBE policies and procedures.
  • Provided leadership to a small crew as required.
  • Conducts self in an appropriate manner while carrying out duties in a student environment and working with school staff.
  • Ensures there is minimal impact on the learning environment by scheduling the work to suit the customer/school.
  • Performs snow removal, sands/salts icy conditions on sidewalks and steps at various CBE sites utilizing light mobile machinery equipped with plough or power broom. Hand shovelling may be required where necessary.
  • Assumes the duties of Foreman as required.
  • Completes locates for utilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Class 3 driver’s license with air brake endorsement
  • Two years related experience in the use of power and manual hand tools, jackhammer, oxyacetylene torch for cutting/heating purposes, aerial lift truck, etc.
  • High School Diploma preferred
