About University Students' Council At Western University The University Students' Council (USC) is an organization led by students to serve the undergraduate population of Western University. In addition to being one of the largest student governments in Canada, the USC is an multi-million dollar not-for-profit that works every day to create, support, and enhance the student experience on campus.

Job Description Position Title: Manager, Government Relations
Department: Advocacy and Government Services
Supervisor: Senior Manager, Advocacy and Government Services
Classification: Management
Remuneration: $60,000 - $65,000
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent, In-Person
Job Summary The Manager, Government Relations acts as a resource for the Students’ Council at Western University (USC). Reporting to the Senior Manager, Advocacy and Government Services, the Manager, Government Relations advises staff and the Executive on how to further the USC’s student advocacy priorities. The Manager, Government Services is responsible for supporting public-facing Executive advocacy at the municipal, provincial, and federal government levels.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Provide project management support to Executive advocacy efforts aimed at Western University and the municipal, provincial, and federal governments.
- Provide staff support for Executives at conferences and government relations meetings.
- Provide education and training on government and media relations for staff or Executives.
- Prepare short-term projects, such as fact sheets, briefings, or campaign material copy.
- Oversee staff and assist Executives in creating submissions to government and other advocacy documents on student issues.
- As assigned, assist staff and Executives in drafting and amending political policies.
- Create and maintain records on political issues and trends, legislation, meetings with government, and relations with partner organizations for the purpose of creating permanent institutional memory.
- Collect and catalog a variety of data relevant to post-secondary education for strategic advice to staff and Executives.
- As assigned, support Executives and Marketing and Communications staff in media relations.
- Oversee the work of the Research Analyst.
- Perform any other job-related duties as required.

Qualifications Education
- A University Degree is required.
Experience
- Experience in an advocacy or government relations environment
- 2 years management experience preferred
- Previous experience in a student politics is an asset
*Education and Experience may be combined during consideration.*

- USC’s Promotions and Communications Department
- Local political officials
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Hours of work are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday; however, these hours are subject to change due to fluctuating operating hours.
- Working at a desk and with a computer for long periods will be required.
- This position may involve some travel.

About University Students' Council at Western University
The University Students' Council (USC) mission is to enhance the educational experience and quality of life for all undergraduates at Western University. To accomplish this mission, the USC functions in three main ways: as an advocacy group, as a service provider and as a student leadership developer.
Incorporated in 1965, the USC is a separate corporation from Western University and is managed by elected student executives (President [Chief Executive Officer], Vice President University Affairs; External Affairs; Student Support & Programming; Governance & Finance; and Communications & Public Affairs) with goals and strategic objectives which change annually.
The USC functions in three main ways:
As an advocacy group: student Council members advocate to the university administration, local groups, political bodies (on all levels of Canadian government) for students interests, and to make sure student voices are being heard.
As a service provider: the USC maintains a variety of commercial operations to provide quality service to students. This includes two campus restaurants, a clothing store, and more. The USC also facilitates the student health, dental and bus pass plans. These initiatives, combined with the many events (such as concerts, speakers and festivals) make up most of the organization's budget.
As a student leadership developer: the USC offers hundreds of paid and volunteer positions for students at Western. These can include internships with business managers, working closely with the student executive, and volunteering on one of the many programming or service files. The core of the USC will always be student leadership and decision-making.
