Wage: $19.03–$21.46 per hour (depending on experience)
Position Summary
The On-Call/Casual Custodian is responsible for ensuring that all assigned areas of the Learning Centre are cleaned and maintained to a high standard of safety and hygiene. This role supports daily operations by keeping workspaces clean, organized, and ready for staff and community use.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Duties
- Clean sinks and toilets in both washrooms; restock paper towel, soap, and toilet tissue.
- Sanitize and wash washroom floors.
- Clean coffee areas and wash coffee cups; restock supplies as needed.
- Wipe and wash interior windows, window sills, furniture, shelves, cupboards, desks, tables, and countertops.
- Dust display cabinets, light fixtures, pictures, furniture, and filing cabinets.
- Empty all garbage cans.
- Clean interior front entrance and exterior front/back entrances.
- Sweep, vacuum, and damp mop hallways and floors.
- Spot clean walls and doors as needed.
- Clean and damp mop Council Chambers, including sink area.
- Ensure windows and doors are locked at end of shift.
- Report any damages or maintenance concerns to the Supervisor immediately.
Weekly Duties
- Vacuum, wash, or rinse interior and exterior mats.
- Remove cobwebs.
Monthly Duties
- Clean exterior windows.
- Clean and defrost fridge(s) as needed.
- Prepare a list of required cleaning supplies and provide to Supervisor for ordering.
General Responsibilities
- Complete all cleaning tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.
- Provide training to casual/on-call workers when approved.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Skills & Experience Requirements
- Two years of previous commercial janitorial experience.
- Ability to troubleshoot and identify problem areas.
- Ability to recognize and report concerns to Supervisor.
- Must be diligent, hardworking, and self-motivated.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Education & Qualifications
- Grade 12.
- Functional literacy to meet WHMIS requirements.
- WHMIS Certificate (to be obtained within 3 months of hire).
- Knowledge of cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment.
- Willingness to complete training as required.
Unusual Job Features
- Quarterly major cleaning duties.
- Flexible hours to support weekend meetings or special events.
- Occasional special-occasion cleanup.
- May recommend external contractors for floor cleaning, waxing, and maintenance.
