Your Opportunity
One Permanent Full Time Position.
Capital Power is seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Specialist, Property Tax to join our Treasury team and Risk Management Team. Reporting to the Sr. Specialist ERM, Insurance and Property Tax , your primary responsibilities will involve acting as the subject matter expert for property tax compliance across our Canadian and U.S. assets. You will be responsible for preparing, reviewing, and analyzing property tax assessments and payments, researching complex tax issues, and identifying opportunities to optimize our tax position. The successful candidate will also contribute to financial planning and business development projects where property taxes play a role, while maintaining strong relationships with assessors, municipal representatives, and internal stakeholders.
The candidate will also support our Insurance program including with renewal coordination, certificate tracking, claims management, due diligence and risk management data analysis.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with foundational experience in property tax who is looking to grow within a dynamic and collaborative energy company.
You will contribute to our team by:
- Acting as the subject matter expert for property tax compliance across Canadian and U.S. jurisdictions.
- Preparing, reviewing, and reconciling property tax statements, invoices, and assessments for accuracy and reasonability.
- Researching property tax issues and provide recommendations.
- Identifying opportunities to reduce property tax assessments and support discussions on government or industry changes.
- Providing input on budgets, forecasts, and financial planning related to property tax.
- Supporting Business Development and Finance teams on projects with potential tax impacts.
- Ensuring timely and accurate property tax payments, coding, and compliance with policies (CESAP, HSE).
- Building and maintaining relationships with assessors, municipal representatives, and internal stakeholders (Operations, Finance, Commercial, Business Development).
- Supporting corporate insurance programs and the placement of appropriate risk-based coverage lines (property, liability, Directors & Officers, Crime, workers compensation, Fiduciary and Auto).
- Responding to ad hoc requests from Finance, Legal, and Operations teams.
- Contributing to process improvement initiatives and documentation.
What you will bring to the role:
Education:
- Degree or Diploma in Business, Finance, or Accounting.
- Certified Member of the Institute (CMI) Property Tax Certification or actively working toward certification.
Experience:
- 3+ years of property tax experience in a professional services or industry tax role.
- Prior exposure to complex tax compliance, research, and financial planning.
- Experience working with ERP systems (Oracle subledger an asset).
Skills & Competencies
- Advanced Excel skills: familiarity with reporting tools (Power BI, etc.) is an asset.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Analytical mindset with excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Collaborative team player who builds effective relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.
- High aptitude for knowledge seeking and learning new skills.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid Office/Work from home position, with possible very minimal travel to meet business users at Capital Power facilities or other offices.
