SMS Equipment is seeking a Technical Specialist, Shovels to support the Komatsu shovel fleet at the Fort Hills mine site. This role provides advanced technical support for shovel performance, availability, and product issue resolution. Working onsite on a 7×7 rotation, you will collaborate closely with customers, OEMs, and internal teams to ensure optimal reliability and continuous improvement of the shovel fleet. This is a safety‑sensitive, onsite position requiring Suncor site access and associated pre‑employment compliance.
Work Location: Fort Hills, AB.
Salary: $118,000 - $125,000 per year.
Work arrangement: Fixed on site – working on location each day.
Schedule: 7x7
This is a FIFO role, marshalling out of Calgary or Edmonton. Travel premium applies; camp accommodations are provided.
What You'll Do
- Serve customers by providing information and resolving technical problems. Act as the liaison between SMS Equipment, Komatsu, and the customer. Resolve concerns by gathering information, asking clarifying questions, and documenting observations of shovel and excavator performance.
- Assist in developing maintenance documentation, project plans, priorities, and schedules while ensuring compliance with customer expectations, OEM standards, and internal procedures. Participate in meetings as required, including site‑level engagements, daily mine meetings, and ongoing collaboration with customer technical groups.
- Provide technical support to ensure the effectiveness of preventative and predictive maintenance programs. Support the development of maintenance standards, processes, BOM details, and best practices for key components and services.
- Lead or support task‑force activities related to product issues, including troubleshooting, root‑cause analysis, and coordination with OEMs, internal resources, and customer SMEs to drive issue resolution and product improvement.
- Gather, analyze, and validate shovel availability data from customers, site operators, and SMS supervisors. Document major component changeouts, identify technical issues impacting availability, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Produce and submit technical reports (TSIs, TSRs, failure analyses, oil sample reviews) to OEMs, internal personnel, and customer stakeholders in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain strong communication and relationships with customers, internal service teams, and external consultants to support equipment reliability, maintenance strategy development, and overall fleet performance.
What You Bring
The ideal candidate will have 5-7 years’ experience as a Journeyperson Heavy Equipment Technician with direct exposure to excavators. Additional qualifications include:
- Strong technical knowledge of Komatsu equipment. Previous Komatsu HET experience is highly desirable.
- An engineering degree (preferably mechanical) is considered an asset.
- Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Word & Excel).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Knowledge of OHSE legislation and fleet inspection requirements.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license and ability to meet site access requirements (Suncor).
