GIS Field Amenity/Infrastructure Assessment Technician

Parks and open spaces are vital to a community’s health. These spaces provide places for people to play, gather, grow food, learn about nature and celebrate. Citizens share these spaces with wildlife and plants. These spaces are also part of the city’s infrastructure network
As the City of Edmonton grows to 2.1 million by 2050, we are looking to continually build, revitalize and innovate our open spaces and we are looking for strong GIS Field Asset Assessment Technicians to help us determine the condition of our assets and help us develop strategic renewal requirements for our Open Spaces
This position combines technology, the outdoors and learning the City of Edmonton from the inside out! As a GIS Field Asset Assessment Technician you will collect field data and asset conditions throughout the city. In addition, successful candidates for this position may be available for recall
What will you do?
- Use GPS/GNSS technology, collect location, attribution and condition information on City of Edmonton assets
- Identify, categorize, and measure the extent and severity of distresses observed in accordance with established standards
- Use various software, pre-process and post-process digital information for use in the Corporate GIS system
- Collaborate with other business areas to ensure accuracy and completeness of data
- Use GeoMedia to update the data sets
- Perform preliminary QA/QC protocols, interpret results and provide corrective actions
- Perform basic technical calculations involving survey and assessment data
- Create and update support documentation and complete data quality control resolution procedures
- Report on productivity accomplishments
- Ensure all material is restocked and equipment is accounted for on a daily basis, recharged and maintained
- Work outdoors and perform a variety of physical duties in all weather conditions
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications: GIS Field Amenity Assessment Technician
- Completion of grade 12, High School Diploma
- Post-secondary courses from a recognized institution in the field of Geomatics, Geography, Cartography, or other GIS related field with course work in data management and spatial analysis would be an asset
- Minimum one year experience in GPS, survey and assessment of park assets
- GIS experience would be considered an asset
GIS Field Infrastructure Assessment Technician
- Completion of grade 12, High School Diploma
- Completion of post-secondary diploma in Civil Technology would be considered an asset
- Minimum one year of experience in GPS, survey and assessment of infrastructure assets, such as roads, parking lots, trails, open structures, stairs, and retaining structures, using GIS tools
- Experience in GPS, survey and assessment of park assets
Skills required for success:
- Thorough understanding of GPS and GIS fundamentals, survey principles and techniques, and asset condition assessment
- Experience and ability to ride an e-bike and collect pavement deflections will be an asset but not required
- Experience in using drones in assessing structures will be an asset but not required
- Ability to perform survey work using GPS mobile equipment
- Knowledge of computerized data gathering methods and analysis techniques and the ability to use GIS software (Hexagon Geomedia), ArcGIS (Esri) and Microsoft Office products
- Ability to use CAD software (AutoCAD, Microstation) and Safe Software FME would be an asset
- Identify, categorize, and measure the extent and severity of distresses observed in accordance with established standards
- Proven ability to organize and schedule workloads to meet ongoing demands
- Ability to express ideas effectively orally and work collaboratively within teams
- Excellent communications skills including the ability to communicate verbally and in writing with clarity and accuracy
- Good analytical skills
- Ability to deal effectively with clients, service providers and users
- Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with others
- Considerable knowledge of planning principles, practices, procedures and standards required to complete work assignments
- Considerable knowledge of computer software applications

Conditions of Employment:
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton; there may be a cost associated with this requirement
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
