GCP Data Governance Engineer (Dataplex) Location: Remote (Canada) Contract Type: Contract Start Date: ASAP
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior GCP Data Governance Engineer with strong enterprise-level experience in Google Cloud Platform, data governance, and Google Cloud Dataplex. This role will focus on designing, implementing, and improving enterprise data governance capabilities, helping organisations establish trusted, discoverable, secure, and well-managed data environments across Google Cloud.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Dataplex, BigQuery, metadata management, data cataloguing, data lineage, data quality, and governance frameworks within large-scale enterprise environments.
Key Responsibilities Design and implement enterprise data governance solutions using Google Cloud Dataplex. Configure and manage data discovery, metadata management, data cataloguing, and governance capabilities across GCP environments. Establish data governance frameworks covering ownership, stewardship, classification, lineage, and access controls. Work with data engineering and platform teams to improve data quality, trust, and usability. Support implementation of data domains, data products, and governance operating models. Develop solutions using GCP data services including BigQuery, Dataproc, Cloud Storage, Data Catalog/metadata services, and related tooling. Define and implement policies around data access, security, compliance, and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with business stakeholders, data owners, architects, and engineering teams to deliver enterprise data solutions. Troubleshoot governance, metadata, lineage, and data management challenges across complex cloud environments.
Required Experience Strong hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Proven enterprise experience with Google Cloud Dataplex. Strong understanding of data governance principles and frameworks. Experience with: Metadata management Data cataloguing Data lineage Data quality management Data classification and security controls Data stewardship models Experience working with BigQuery and modern cloud data platforms. Understanding of cloud security concepts, IAM, and access governance. Ability to work with large-scale enterprise data environments. Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Experience Experience in regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, insurance, or government. Experience implementing enterprise data mesh or domain-driven data governance approaches. Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform. Experience with Python, SQL, or cloud automation. Experience supporting cloud migrations or modernisation programmes.
Ideal Candidate Profile
You are a senior data platform professional who understands both the technical and governance sides of enterprise data. You can translate business requirements into scalable GCP solutions and have practical experience enabling organisations to trust, discover, and manage their data effectively.
