Team Leader - Registered Nurse (RN) Cysto

About the role

The Team Leader in the Cystoscopy/Urology Department provides clinical expertise and operational leadership to support the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care for the assigned services. Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Team Leader works closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, MDRD, the clinical educator, and interprofessional teams to coordinate daily operations and optimize patient flow within the department. The Team Leader supports the implementation and optimization of electronic health record systems, Epic and clinical workflows to enhance patient flow, documentation, and operational efficiency.

In this role, the Team Leader is responsible for overseeing day-to-day clinical and operational activities, including supervision of procedural schedules, real-time staff schedule adjustments, staff assignments, and resource allocation to meet service demands. The role includes proactive review of bookings to ensure accuracy, readiness, and appropriate coordination of staffing, equipment, instrumentation, and supplies.

The Team Leader supports the efficient utilization of resources and responds to changing clinical priorities with sound judgment, strong critical thinking, and effective problem-solving. Ongoing collaboration with surgeons, MDRD, other departments, and vendors supports the introduction of new procedures, equipment, and supplies, as well as the development and review of clinical protocols with a focus on patient safety and best practices.

The Team Leader maintains flexibility in response to changing clinical demands by adjusting assignments and supporting workload distribution to ensure patient flow. This includes stepping into clinical assignments as needed, assisting with staff coverage during breaks, and reallocating resources in real time to support safe, efficient, and continuous patient care.

The Team Leader participates in and leads quality improvement initiatives, including perioperative efficiency and Accreditation activities, with a focus on improving patient outcomes, operational effectiveness, and team engagement.

The role promotes a culture of safety, accountability, and respect. This includes timely follow-up on safety reports, supporting staff during urgent and emergent situations, and reinforcing adherence to clinical policies and practice standards. The Team Leader outlines clear expectations for practice, supports staff growth and professional development through coaching and mentorship, throughout the orientation phase of new hires and beyond, as well as contributes to a positive learning environment in collaboration with the clinical educator.

Qualifications:

  • Current registration and good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Post-graduate Operating Room Nursing Certificate required
  • Post-Anesthesia Care Nursing or Critical Care Certificate is an asset or willing to complete within 1 year.
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Current ACLS certification required
  • Minimum 1 years of leadership experience in a Team Leader or Charge Nurse role
  • Minimum 5 years of recent Operating Room experience
  • Pre and post-anesthesia nursing experience preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
  • Laser certification preferred
  • Demonstrated strengths in communication, critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, and change management
  • Proven leadership and team-building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to teach, coach, and mentor staff using adult learning principles
  • Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and ongoing professional development
  • Membership in RNAO, OPANA (NAPANc) and ORNAC is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and experience with electronic health records e.g. Epic, scheduling systems, and clinical/operational systems to support workflow, reporting, and communication
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and on-call as required
  • Excellent attendance record
