This posting

This posting will be used to fill 1 term, anticipatory permanent, full-time position working 75 hours bi-weekly. It will establish a 12-month eligibility list which may be used to fill similar positions.

This job is based in the thriving and diverse city of Whitehorse in the beautiful Yukon.

Who we are

Environmental Health Services (EHS) works to protect the health and safety of the public across a wide variety of program areas including food safety, drinking water, sewage disposal, housing, recreational facilities, rabies control, tobacco and vaping control and personal services. To achieve the goal of protecting public health, EHS follows a progressive enforcement strategy to ensure compliance to requirements under the Public Health and Safety Act, local and national standards, guidelines, and public health best practices. You will be part of a team that actively identifies hazards in recreational, commercial and industrial premises through various activities including performing inspections so businesses can reopen and stay open.

Your role

The Environmental Health Officer (EHO) is responsible for the protection of public health and safety through the development and implementation of a broad range of risk based programs, enforcement of legislation, participation on national and local committees, contribution to departmental and inter-departmental activities, and other related duties.

Essential qualifications

Please submit your resume clearly demonstrating how you meet the qualifications below. Selections for further consideration will be based solely on the information you provide in your resume.

  • Bachelor Degree in Environmental Health;

  • Has been awarded CPHI(C) credential by the Board of Certification, Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors;

  • Experience conducting public health inspections in a variety of program areas (e.g., food safety, drinking water, sewage disposal, personal services, etc.); and,

  • Experience using Hedgehog, Amanda or other health inspection software tools to manage and perform inspections and applications is an asset.

  • Ability to interpret, administer, and enforce acts and regulations associated with environmental health best practices.

Conditions of employment

You must meet the following conditions before being hired, or within the time frame noted.

Has been awarded a Certificate in Public Health Inspection – Canada (or proof of eligibility to be registered within 6 months of hire); a member in good standing of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors; valid class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent; security clearance with vulnerable sector; and WHMIS 2015 within 1 month of hire

Job requirements

This job requires you to perform, and/or be exposed to, the following:

Approximately 15% to 25% of job time is spent travelling throughout the Yukon, year round, to small, rural communities; when performing inspections, may be exposed to hazardous substances and requirement to work in confined spaces; may be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) for inspections related to COVID-19; and, lifting required up to 25 kg.
