Brief Overview:

The Métis Nation–Saskatchewan has developed the Mushkeg ni Pishkaapahtaynaan program with the goal of better understanding and sharing the importance of muskegs to the Métis way of life, and future.

Muskegs have historically served a critical role in the ecosystems of Northern Saskatchewan and provided sustenance for the Indigenous peoples of the province. While they continue to serve a critical role and support Métis citizens, they are under threat. This role will support conservation work on Muskegs as well as other conservation programs within the Métis Nation–Saskatchewan Ministry of Lands and Environment. The position will work to create events, share information, mobilize and support communities and bring a voice to Métis conservation efforts in the province.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with community members to promote research and conservation of Muskegs.
  • Engage with government agencies, research institutions, and industry stakeholders to foster partnerships and secure resources.
  • Working alongside the Conservation staff to prepare regular reports on program progress and contribute to program evaluations.
  • Assist in budget preparation, track program expenses, and ensure alignment with financial guidelines.
  • Support the preparation of grant applications and funding proposals to enhance conservation initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Familiarity with Métis culture, history, and the significance of land and traditional practices to Métis citizens.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Dictation or stenography.
  • Strong understanding of environmental conservation, land management, and ecosystem sustainability, with knowledge of muskegs and northern landscapes considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with community members, government agencies, research institutions, and industry stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, and meet deadlines.
  • Competence in financial tracking, budgeting, and basic administrative procedures.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and initiative in advancing conservation priorities.
  • Flexibility to travel within Saskatchewan and adapt to varying work environments, including office, community, and field settings.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Biology, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
  • A combination of education and relevant work experience in conservation, community engagement, or program administration will be considered in lieu of formal education.
