Toronto, Ontario, Canada (Hybrid)

The Technical Writer/Trainer Group Lead prepares Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manuals for company products and delivers technical training courses. This role provides technical support to Customer Service when required. Acting as a Project Lead, this position oversees multiple projects, manages the O&M training team’s cost and schedule, and interfaces daily with Project Managers, Engineers, and Customers. Additionally, the role involves coaching and supervising Technical Writers/Trainers, delegating and coordinating tasks, monitoring and reporting on activity progress, and participating in the planning, scheduling, and budgeting of projects.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Ensure manuals describe safe practices for performing Preventive and Corrective maintenance procedures that may not necessarily be listed in the Hazard Log.
  • Prepare, review, update, and sign off Work Package Agreement (WPA) for projects.
  • Provide Bottoms-Up Estimate (BUE) analysis, Estimate to Complete (ETC) reviews, and Request for Quotation (RFQ) estimates to the Project team.
  • Attend Risk Review Meetings, update Month-End Schedules, and participate in key Design Review meetings with Customers.
  • Support Bids and Proposals group inputs.
  • Evaluate and report on project Estimates to Complete (ETC) to clarify cost exposures and future labor needs.
  • Perform Training Needs Analysis (TNA).
  • Work collaboratively with other training contributors to ensure content completeness and consistency.
  • Manage work processes to ensure on-time delivery, emphasizing continuous productivity, cost-effectiveness, quality improvement, and customer satisfaction.
  • Provide support for assigned projects across all aspects of training and documentation, including defining resource requirements and outlining budgets for course and manual development.
  • Track assigned projects and provide/update regular status reports for the Training Manager and key stakeholders.
  • Act as the single point of contact for projects with outsourced deliverables by coordinating with vendor staff, coaching and directing vendors, and reviewing outputs and progress reports/estimates.
  • Supervise, coach, motivate, and develop the skills of the Training and Technical Writing staff while emphasizing safety.
  • Interact with customers, trainers, and other stakeholders to achieve customer satisfaction. Outline acceptance criteria based on requirements and periodically review and improve training content.
  • Ensure adherence to standards, procedures, practices, and controls.
  • Conduct weekly meetings with the Operations/Maintenance team to review activities, address questions, and deliverables, escalate issues (e.g., shortage of work, blocking issues, or excessive workload) to the Training Manager.
  • Review all Change Requests (CRs) for the Operations/Maintenance team and ensure their analysis and progression meet deadlines.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on employees’ performance to the Manager.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience in preparing technical documentation and delivering technical training.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Technical training experience with complex systems and solutions.
  • Proven didactic skills, knowledge of teaching methods, and ability to analyze and interpret hardware/software/system specifications and documentation.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Superior customer service and presentation skills.
  • Ability to assess the skills and competency of assigned staff.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with a high level of attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Electronics/Technology or equivalent experience.
  • Certification in Adult Learning Principles and Project Management would be an asset.
  • Project management experience and/or experience delivering complex bids and proposals
