Operator in Training, Utility Stations

Job Code: 201 Department: Water & Waste Services

Job Summary:

This incumbent assists certified Utility Stations Operators with the overall operation and maintenance of various City water and sewage facilities and systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assists with operating, monitoring, inspecting, maintaining of all water and sewage treatment, collection, and distribution systems and facilities.
  2. Assists with identifying and taking corrective action for minor treatment plant operations, to ensure compliance with all statutory, regulatory and internal procedures and processes.
  3. Assists with operating and performing maintenance on all water and sewage systems, including pumping, circulation and pressure regulating stations, groundwater wells, water reservoirs, sewage treatment facilities, sanitary and storm sewer lift stations.
  4. Assists with conducting chemical, physical and bacteriological sampling of potable water, recording results and making adjustments as required. Operates, tests and calibrates analyzers and chemical dosage control and measuring equipment.
  5. Assists with developing and maintaining standard operating procedures, maintenance and asset management systems.
  6. Assists with operating, testing and calibrating analyzers and chemical dosage control and measuring equipment.
  7. Assists with testing and maintenance of various alarms and monitoring systems.
  8. Assists with maintaining a tidy, sanitary appearance of the water and sewage treatment plants.
  9. Assists with taking daily readings, logging irregularities and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
    10 Follow, so far as is reasonably practicable, established safety procedures and standards.
  10. Other related duties.

Job Requirements:

Working Conditions:

Continuous exposure to disagreeable conditions such as dust/dirt, fumes/odours, inclement weather, temperature extremes bodily wastes/fluids, human waste, fats, oils, rancid food grease, raw sewage, hazardous chemicals and work in confined spaces. Works four 10-hour days per week.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Grade 12
  • EOCP or equivalent Operator in Training certification, or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • 3 months experience at a Class I or higher facility In any of the four different fields: Drinking Water Treatment, Wastewater Treatment, Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection considered an asset.
  • One-year on-the-job training (3 months in each field).
  • Standard First Aid, Level C CPR (14 hrs); Confined Space Entrant/Attendant (14 hrs); Fall Arrest Course (7 hrs) or ability to obtain within 3 months.
  • WHMIS & TDG Certificate (14 hrs); Chlorine Handling Certificate (35 hrs); Hazard Assessment and Control Course (7 hrs); Plant High Voltage Safety (14 hrs); Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (7 hrs); Pumps, Theory, Operation & Maintenance (35 hrs) or ability to obtain within one year.
  • Experience with chemical and water sampling, testing and interpretation Is preferred.
  • Proven ability to concentrate, pay attention to detail, organize, priority set and be a team player.
  • Ability to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Motorized vehicles and equipment including: service trucks, skidoo, boat/motor, ATV, chlorine dosage feed systems & monitoring equipment, electrolysis chlorine generation equipment, sodium hypochlorite chemical feed &monitoring equipment, pumps, truck mounted hoist equipment, safety harness, generators, chain falls & slings, hand and power tools, self-contained breathing apparatus, gas detectors and computers, including software for SCADA, computerized maintenance systems and computer applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, and Work Tech.
