About the role

Position Title: Controller

Salary: $75,000 - $90,000

Schedule: 8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday to Friday (75 hours bi-weekly)

Summary of Position:

The Controller is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Finance department and supporting the CFO in delivering accurate financial reporting, ensuring compliance, and maintaining strong internal controls. The role provides leadership in budgeting, forecasting, and overseeing financial systems and reporting processes.

Primary Objectives:

To lead the operational financial functions of the organization by managing the accounting team, developing robust financial systems, and ensuring compliance with applicable standards and regulations while delivering accurate and timely financial reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all accounting operations including AR, AP, payroll, GL, and bank reconciliations.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes.
  • Lead the preparation of year-end working papers and audit support documentation.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff and support professional development.
  • Support budget creation, tracking, and variance analysis across departments.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, CRA regulations, and funding requirements.
  • Implement and monitor internal controls and financial policies.
  • Maintain the financial systems and coordinate improvements to processes and reporting tools.
  • Collaborate with the CFO to provide strategic financial insight and analysis.
  • Other related duties and tasks as required, as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.

Requirements

Qualifications (minimum Education and Experience requirements):

Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Education:

  • Post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA designation is required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive financial management experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Experience in the non-profit or housing sector is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong technical accounting and financial reporting skills.
  • Experience managing audits and working with external auditors.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and team-building skills.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial software (e.g., Yardi).
  • Analytical thinker with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Additional Criteria for Role:

  • Criminal Record Check required.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle with $2 million liability business class insurance.
  • Must be available for occasional travel and extended hours during year-end and audit periods.
