About the role

YOUR ROLE

The Financial Controller is responsible for providing leadership and coordinating the company's financial planning, debt financing, and budgeting functions. The Financial Controller also ensures that the company's accounting procedures comply with generally accepted accounting principles.

The Financial Controller is responsible for all aspects of the financial process and has direct responsibility for the organization's accounting practices, maintaining financial records, and preparing financial reports. This position oversees all general accounting, property accounting, cost accounting, budget controls, and data processing functions. The Financial Controller is responsible for evaluating results in terms of costs, budgets, operating policies, trends, and business opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

MANAGEMENT

  • Maintain documented accounting policies and procedures.

  • Manage outsourced accounting functions.

  • Oversee accounting operations, including designing an organizational structure that supports departmental goals and objectives.

  • Supervise the accounting operations of subsidiaries, including their internal controls, transaction processing, policies, and procedures.

  • Develop supervisory capabilities within the accounting team across cost accounting, general accounting, payroll, and data processing functions.

  • Establish and implement short- and long-term departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.

  • Develop systems and procedures to ensure efficient and effective financial management.

  • Liaise with government auditors regarding GST/QST and income tax audits.

  • Develop and maintain a centralized accounting system to ensure effective account management.

FINANCIAL TRANSACTIONS

  • Ensure accounts payable are paid on time.

  • Ensure all reasonable vendor discounts are captured.

  • Ensure accounts receivable are collected promptly.

  • Process payroll accurately and on schedule.

  • Ensure monthly bank reconciliations are completed.

  • Ensure debt repayments are made on time.

  • Maintain the chart of accounts.

  • Maintain an organized accounting filing system.

  • Maintain internal controls over accounting transactions.

FINANCIAL REPORTING

  • Maintain and reconcile the General Ledger, oversee month-end close activities, and ensure timely completion of bank reconciliations.

  • Prepare and publish complete financial statements on a timely basis.

  • Recommend performance benchmarks to measure company operating results.

  • Calculate and publish financial and operational performance metrics.

  • Manage the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.

  • Analyze budget variances and report significant issues to management.

  • Develop and maintain a management cost reporting system.

  • Provide financial analysis as required, particularly for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.

  • Interpret operating results and their financial impact on the business, making recommendations to reduce costs and improve profitability.

COMPLIANCE

  • Monitor debt levels and ensure compliance with debt covenants.

  • Ensure compliance with provincial and federal government reporting and tax filing requirements.

  • Oversee all general accounting activities in accordance with IFRS standards, including month-end close, compliance with company policies and procedures, statutory tax reporting, and providing the necessary information to support external audits.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT

  • Ensure the effective performance of the Accounting and Finance Department.

  • Participate in meetings to improve productivity, resolve customer service issues, and manage team workload.

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate department employees.

  • Assist in onboarding and training new employees within the department.

  • Foster constructive and collaborative working relationships with team members and colleagues across the organization.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Orient new employees on the company's accounting policies.

  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field required, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • 8 to 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in the manufacturing and/or supply chain industry.

KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written French.

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.

  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation considered an asset.

  • Experience managing the full accounting cycle, including month-end and year-end close.

  • Strong knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cost control principles, and IFRS.

  • Experience with automated financial reporting and accounting systems.

  • Knowledge of provincial and federal financial regulations.

  • Knowledge of foreign exchange contracts.

  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and forecasts.

  • Working knowledge of short- and long-term budgeting and forecasting, cash flow budgeting, and product line profitability analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience managing all aspects of an accounting department.
