About the role

Location of Work: Mistissini

Status: Permanent Full-time

Core Functions The primary purpose of the Cook position is to prepare and serve food to residents of the community following corporate standards and guidelines. The incumbent will ensure compliance with the legislatory requirements for health and safety, specifically pertaining to the discipline/field/area of food safety.

Functional Responsibilities

  • Plan and organize a weekly menu and ensure that supplies are ordered and available.
  • Prepare the ingredients required for cooking by chopping and peeling vegetables as well as cutting meat among other duties.
  • Setting up workstations with all required equipment and cooking ingredients in preparation for resident programs.
  • Assure that all dietary procedures are followed in accordance with established policies.
  • Keep an accurate record of all purchases and remain within budget.
  • Dispose of food and waste in accordance with established policies.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of kitchen storage and service areas.
  • Educate the residents of the Tiny Home’s community on the proper techniques for maintaining a clean and organized cooking/work space (e.g., decontamination of counters).
  • Ensure all food and other items such as condiments, sauces and spices are stored properly.
  • Coach and train the residents of the Tiny Home’s community on the proper techniques required for the preparation and preservation of food and meals.
  • Check quality, color and consistency of ingredients.
  • Monitor stock and place orders when there are shortages in food items.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organized workplace.
  • Ensure that all equipment is operating properly.

Other Responsibilities

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications Education and Certification:

  • Diploma of vocational studies in Professional Cooking.
  • Food Handlers Card

Experience

  • Three to Five years of relevant work experience in culinary environment

Language

  • Verbal Fluency in Cree and English.
  • Fluency in French is considered an asset.

Knowledge And Abilities

  • Proven experience as a cook and knowledge of traditional cooking an asset.
  • Knowledge of various cooking procedures and methods (grilling, baking, boiling, frying, etc.).
  • Ability to follow all sanitation procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Very good communication skills.
  • Excellent physical condition and stamina.
  • Ability to work with budgets.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong judgment and proven ability to problem solve.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand for long hours.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally

The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment.

The Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) represents the approximately 20,000 Crees of Eeyou Istchee. The Cree Nation Government exercises governmental and administrative functions on behalf of the Cree Nation. Both have identical membership, board of directors, governing structures and are managed and operated as one.

The Cree Nation Head Office is located in the community of Nemaska, although there are also satellite offices in other communities and Montreal. The two offices of the Embassy of the Cree Nation, located in Ottawa and Quebec City, are instrumental in upholding the Cree Nation’s relations with the federal and provincial governments and providing technical support to its 10 departments.
