ROLE PURPOSE
The Vancouver Island Therapeutic Community (VITC) is a twenty four bed, residential, substance abuse, treatment program for adult males. The Kitchen Coordinator under the direction of the Program Manager oversees meal planning and supports staff in meal preparation. They will conduct ordering and meal planning in accordance with the standards in Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide, formulate kitchen’s policies and procedures and evaluate the kitchen’s activities in consultation with the Program Manager.
HOURS (40 hours per week)
Monday to Friday, 0900-1730

REPORTING AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports and is accountable to the Program Manager of the facility or their designate
- Participates actively in house, staff, and staff/resident meetings
- Participates as a member of the Connective staff team
- Liaises with outside professionals from other agencies or government bodies as required
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Under the direction of the program manager, oversees and manages all kitchen operations
- Plans and develops the programs in consultation with the Program Manager or their designate. Plans and implements kitchen activities and special events
- Under the direction of the Program Manager, oversees the day-to-day operation of the kitchen by ensuring that the necessary facilities and equipment are in place, kitchen guidelines and policies are adhered to, and kitchen standards and licensing requirements are met
- Provides direct support services as assigned by Program Manager or their designate
- Oversees and manages all kitchen operations ensuring healthy and safe work practices
- Manages and orders inventory and create an inventory management system for kitchen supplies, ensuring sufficient stock levels - Creates, reviews and updates menu options for residents with any dietary restrictions - Establishes, implements, and communicates menu recipe requirements
- Provides ongoing kitchen training and knowledge transfer to the kitchen teams
- Ensures the safe storage and disposal of food and beverages
- Ensures preparation and cooking stations are stocked appropriately
- Notifies Leadership Team of any repairs or maintenance required for kitchen appliances and equipment - Enforces proper sanitation and preparation practices and procedures.
- Orients, determines the need for and provides training to volunteers in the kitchen.
- Monitors and authorizes program/s expenditures and maintains financial records in accordance with established procedures.
- Promotes public awareness of and support for the program by performing duties such as producing promotional materials and attending community events.
- Liaises with community service providers and other professionals to coordinate service provision, facilitate referrals to the program and represent the organization or program in external events.
- Maintains related records and statistics and produces reports as required.
- Other duties shall be assigned as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Function independently, while remaining a crucial member of the support team
- Adhere to Connective policies and procedures
- Be available to work flexible hours as needed. May include some evenings/weekends, as determined by the regional office needs and schedules EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
- Two years of professional kitchen experience
- An understanding of providing service to people with different learning abilities
- Demonstrated experience in an applicable residential setting
- Demonstrated a good working knowledge of the technical details important to the functioning of group residences
- Demonstrated the ability to teach skills and work effectively with others
- Knowledge of theory, principles, and practices in the fields related to the residence
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Diploma in a Culinary program
REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to successfully complete a Criminal Records Check
Current Emergency First Aid Certificate (please refer to the Certificates accepted in B.C. - WorkSafeBC)
- Food Safe Certificate (Level 1 and Level 2)
- Class 5 driver’s license
**Important:**Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada, observe their weekly hours limit if under a temporary or study visa, and provide proof of eligibility if selected for the role.
