This is a rare opportunity to step into a leadership role in a thriving local multiplatform newsroom full of award winning journalists. The team at CBC New Brunswick produces daily and investigative news and current affairs on digital, radio and video platforms, seven days a week.
As the Executive Producer of News and Current Affairs, you will guide great journalistic content and the people behind it. With the Managing Editor of CBC New Brunswick, you will be in charge of teams in three stations, Fredericton, Moncton, and Saint John, and a bureau in Campbellton.
You will ensure CBC New Brunswick sets the province’s news agenda while putting audience needs at the centre of your decision-making, ensuring our programming connects our audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities.
You will guide programming decisions around breaking news events and are the go-to person for journalistic decisions for all programs and platforms. To support that, you have an in-depth understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices and legal risk management. You also understand the needs of our different platforms – audio, video and text – and ensure our journalism is always of the highest quality.
You can make quick decisions when required but you’re an open-minded leader who encourages healthy debate and creative thinking. You are approachable and supportive and demonstrate your commitment to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture. You are also skilled at navigating conflict and change, at breaking down silos and championing team success.
You strive to broaden the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected in programming, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. To that end, you have an awareness of the diversity of lived experience and cultural communities in New Brunswick. You are adept at engaging with audiences and connecting with the community, looking for new ways to reach people where they are. You are comfortable listening to and engaging with people who have different viewpoints, and welcome opportunities to challenge the status quo and confront bias.
Your collaborative approach and clear communication style inspires teams to achieve the station’s strategic objectives, which you will determine with the managing editor.
Your responsibilities:
- Oversee CBC New Brunswick’s daily operations, focusing both on the journalism and programming, and the people who make it.
- Lead and foster a respectful and inclusive workplace culture across all CBC New Brunswick stations.
- Provide editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, relevant and impactful, and elevates a range of voices and perspectives.
- Make editorial coverage decisions that align with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices
- Provide guidance on legal risk management.
- Monitor audience and industry trends, and develop ideas and approaches for future opportunities.
- Coordinate and oversee live and breaking news specials.
- Oversee staffing and scheduling decisions.
- Identify and develop emerging talent within and outside CBC New Brunswick, and actively support efforts to improve the recruitment of candidates from underrepresented groups.
Your profile:
- Demonstrated experience leading teams in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
- Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
- Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
- A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term planning.
- A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity and embrace experimentation.
- Demonstrated skills in talent recognition, development and retention.
- Experience and commitment to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives and to connect with new, younger and more diverse audiences.
- A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in New Brunswick, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
- Strong people management skills with a keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture. Skilled at navigating conflict and fostering psychological wellbeing in the workplace.
Additional Requirements:
- University degree or equivalent.
- Five (5) years of related experience
- Ability to work flexible hours as required.
- Highly developed organizational skills.
- An understanding of the province of New Brunswick is a key asset.
- French language skills are an asset.
Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next
step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:
- A mandatory Criminal record check.
- Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
