DUTIES
Reporting to the Associate Registrar, the Academic Advisor will be responsible for the development and implementation of UCN’s application,
admission, advising and registration processes for students in UCN’s community-based programming. This will include assistance with such
issues as course selection, the admissions process and career planning. The incumbent will also provide information and related referral
services for students as necessary. The Academic Advisor will work with relevant external agencies including other post-secondary
institutions and Indigenous organizations to ensure the smooth processing of all documentation related to courses/programs. The incumbent
must be available to work around the academic schedule to ensure services are provided to clients on time. Occasional travel to northern
communities may be required for student support.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree in Counselling, Social Sciences; or an applied counselling diploma and 2 years counselling experience; other
equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Experience in career counselling
Experience with client advising and coaching
Experience in a fast-paced service-centered and/or academic centered role evaluating complex student academic needs
Experience with interpreting, applying and advising on policies and procedures
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Ability to work as part of a team to facilitate the student’s learning process
Excellent computer skills with proficiency in MS Office 365 and internet searching
Ability to manage sensitive information and maintain confidentiality
Strong time management and organizational skills
Ability to understand cultural influences and issues specific to adult learners in northern communities
Commitment to life-long learning
ASSETS
Knowledge of University or College courses/programs
Working with Elders and Northern communities
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ability to travel to northern and remote communities by road and air
Must be a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada
