About the role

About Upstream Data Inc.

At Upstream Data, we specialize in providing high-quality fabrication, field, mechanical, & machining services tailored to the oil and gas industry. Our Lloydminster facility is a fast-paced manufacturing environment focused on high-quality production, equipment longevity, and operational efficiency.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Plant Manager of Power Generation, the Engine Tear Down Technician is a crucial part of our manufacturing and refurbishment process. In this role, you will be responsible for the methodical, safe, and efficient deconstruction of automotive engines and their sub-assemblies down to the bare block. This position requires a sharp eye for mechanical detail, strong organizational skills to track and sort parts, and an absolute commitment to safety and environmental fluid containment.

Key Responsibilities

Engine Disassembly & Tear Down: Methodically strip automotive engines and components down to the bare block using pneumatic tools, impact guns, cranes, and specialized pulling equipment. Ensure no damage occurs to high-value, reusable internal cores (crankshafts, camshafts, cylinder heads). Fluid & Environmental Management: Responsibly drain, capture, and log all engine fluids, oils, and coolants prior to disassembly. Maintain a spotless, hazard-free containment area to prevent spills or workshop contamination. Component Inspection & Sorting: Visually inspect removed parts for wear, fractures, overheating, or catastrophic failure. Systematically sort items into designated salvageable, rebuildable, or scrap metal categories. Clean and degrease components using parts washers or hot tanks. Inventory & Documentation: Accurately track, tag, and label disassembled engine blocks and harvested parts to maintain clear trace history. Log core conditions and report recurring or unusual failure trends to your supervisor. Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to all workshop safety protocols, including PPE requirements, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe hoisting practices. Keep parts baskets organized to ensure a clean, trip-free workspace.

Qualifications & Skills

Experience: Proven experience as an engine tear-down technician, automotive dismantler, or a closely related mechanical deconstruction role. Tool Proficiency: Strong, confident experience operating air, power, and hand tools commonly used in heavy mechanical settings. Technical Literacy: Ability to understand basic mechanical schematics, identify standard engine components, and accurately log alphanumeric serial/part data. Detail-Oriented: A commitment to keeping components systematically organized during high-volume production teardowns. Safety First: Thorough understanding of safe heavy lifting, crane operation, and workplace safety protocols

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

This position is highly physically demanding and requires standing for extended periods, bending, crouching, and regularly lifting heavy engine objects up to standard safety thresholds. Daily tasks involve working in close proximity to heavy industrial workshop machinery. Continuous exposure to standard workshop elements including grease, oils, solvents, engine lubricants, and ambient noise. Occasional overtime may be required during peak production cycles.
