We are looking for a Transport / Yard Operations Supervisor to join our team. If you have a strong work ethic, are driven and want to be part of a team that provides growth and a collaborative environment, this opportunity is for you.

Reporting to the General Manager, the Supervisor position is a mid level front line management position responsible for meeting GT Group’s service commitments by managing the day-to-day trucking operations.

Note: This Job Description may not encompass the entire scope of this role, as other duties maybe assigned by management.

How You’ll CONTRIBUTE

Planning & Logistics

  • Lead and manage a fast paced and high-volume transportation operation though a team of dispatchers, yard crew, shunters, crane operators and front-line employees to ensure the accurate and timely completion of all container transportation activities and supporting office tasks.
  • Understand and use key metrics to manage transportation performance, including on-time pickup and delivery, truck utilization and truck milage, container intermediates and HOS.
  • Lead effort to improve fleet/equipment utilization, maintenance availability and fuel efficiency.
  • Address activities in documentation, transportation, and materials handling.
  • Ensure and monitor the continuous flow of communications and information relating to freight delivery so the appropriate parties are aware of solutions/actions to be taken to ensure safe and timely operations.

Problem Solving

  • Understand customer’s needs, service those needs, and maintain and develop positive business relationships with a customer's key personnel involved in or directly relevant to logistics activities.
  • Ability to think and respond quickly, and adjust schedules and operating plans in response to unplanned events.
  • Make informed decisions based on safety, service and productivity standards, with an understanding of company processes, policies and procedures.
  • Recognize risks and problems and work collaboratively with others to practical and speedy resolution.

People Management

  • Participate in meetings to improve productivity, resolve customer service issues and manage workload of team.
  • Coach and develop team members using a positive attitude, collaboration, clear communication, and direction.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate department staff.
  • Provide orientation for new staff.
  • Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with those on your team, as well as cross functionally.

Safety

  • Lead a culture of safety through personal example.
  • Develop, execute, and assess continuous improvement plan to reduce incidents.
  • Proactively identify and correct unsafe drivers/employees, unsafe conditions, work processes, and behaviors.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable company policies and procedures.
  • Coach through safety observations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs other related work as required.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • College diploma or university degree in the field of transportation, logistics and/or supply chain, or equivalent. Terminal experience considered an asset.
  • 5-7 years equivalent work experience directly managing dispatch, trucks and drivers.
  • Trained in the transportation of dangerous goods is desired.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of CAN/USA HOS practices.
  • Experience leading a dispatch department, yard crew, shunters, crane operators and front-line employees.
  • Must have ability to work efficiently with time management and organizational skills with follow-up and follow through.
  • Ability to drive process improvement and lead change.
  • Must demonstrate ownership & responsibility for running the operation with a sense of urgency.
  • Strong written/oral communication including the ability to present in front of others, and demonstrate active listening skills are required.
