The Ministry of Highways, Southern Operations is seeking to find the successful candidate for the Labour Service Seasonal position as Supervisor of Ferry Operations at the Riverhurst Ferry, Moose Jaw District. As the Supervisor of Ferry Operations, you will operate and supervise the operation of the Riverhurst Ferry crossing and passengers. You will supervise staff, assist in the training of new staff, and are responsible to schedule staff working schedules. Instruct, guide, coach, train and encourage others to enhance their job performance and further develop their skills.

As the Supervisor of Ferry Operations, you will operate and supervise the operation of a large cable ferry carrying vehicles, farm machinery, semis and passengers travelling across Lake Diefenbaker at the Riverhurst Ferry crossing. Additional duties will include washing, fueling, changing oil, greasing, sanding, painting and servicing the Ferry. Other duties will include maintaining the grounds and buildings at the ferry crossing. You will have eleven ferry operators reporting directly to you. You will be responsible for creating work schedules and ensuring the schedules support the operational hours of the Ferry crossing which runs 24 hours, 7 days a week unless mechanical issues, water flows or other environmental conditions such as wind prevent the ferry from operating. You will be responsible for monitoring water flows and determining maximum allowable weights carried on the ferry according to water flows or sandbar issues. You will be responsible for ensuring that Ferry Crossing signs at various locations are updated accordingly either indicating the maximum allowable weight or in some circumstances when the ferry is closed due to repairs, low and high-water levels or other environmental issues.

You will supervise and participate in the spring ferry launch and the end of season dry docking. You will compile a list of supplies, tools and parts at the end of the season that are required for the following season. You will communicate directly with the Ministry of Highways District Office in Moose Jaw regarding operating interruptions, maximum weight changes and any other issues that may arise. You will communicate directly with the Ministry of Highways Repair Depot in Moose Jaw for planned repairs, mechanical concerns or emergency repairs.

You will be responsible for submitting time sheets every two weeks and daily hours for the crew. The Traffic Data Sheets identify the number and type of vehicles, farm equipment, other types of transportation, number of passengers and the number of crossings for the day. You must be able to work shift and all days of the week as well as work alone the majority of the time. You must be in good health and physical condition as some heavy lifting is involved. You must be able to work in adverse weather and environmental conditions.

This position is a seasonal position with an approximate work period of April 1 to December 31 of each year.

The employee must be able to report to work on the east side of Lake Diefenbaker where the ferry office is located.
