As an experienced fitness instructor within Recreation and Social Programs or Parks and Open Spaces, you will teach a variety of fitness programs. These may include Adapted Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Dance-based Fitness, Group, Older Adult, Strength Training, Child/Youth Fitness, Cycling, Pre & Post Natal, and Zumba. Fitness instructors are responsible for planning and leading registered and/or drop-in fitness programs. Primary duties include:

  • Teach specific skills to participants through progressive physical fitness development and sharing of knowledge.
  • Plan and implement quality fitness programs.
  • Assess participant needs and provide adaptations as necessary.
  • Prepare and maintain equipment, supplies, and program space.
  • Ensure safety of participants.
  • Maintain program records and assist with program evaluation.
  • Maintain high degree of customer service.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Dryland Instructors must hold current Fitness Instructor Certification from Fitness Alberta (or equivalent e.g., YMCA, canfitpro, etc.), and/or
  • Certification/training and experience specific to their respective specialty (e.g., Cycle, Zumba, Barre, etc.).
  • Aquatic Instructors must hold current Aquatic Exercise certification from Fitness Alberta (or equivalent e.g., CALA, etc.); Completion of a Tethered Deep Water Workout certificate is considered an asset.
  • Previous experience in fitness instruction is considered an asset for all applicants.
  • Level 2 Fitness Instructors must have at least 3 years of leadership and instructional experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess participant needs and to determine adaptations as necessary.
  • Strong communication skills along with demonstrated initiative, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Sound judgement in safety standards and well-developed customer service skills.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • Current Intermediate First Aid certification (equivalent to Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) level ¿C¿, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is required.
  • CPR must be renewed every two years.
  • A valid Security Clearance with Vulnerable Sector Search must be provided. Date of completion must be within the last 12 months.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
  • Applicants may be contacted, interviewed, and hired throughout the duration of this competition.

Compensation: Instructor Level 1 $26.48- 32.59 per hour Instructor Level 2 $30.55 - 40.74 per hour

Days of Work: This position typically works various days including daytime, evenings, and weekends.

Hours of work: This position works on-call hours based on operational requirements.
