Position Summary
This position is responsible for setting up and operating conventional, special-purpose, and
computer numerical control (CNC) machines. This role involves machine set-up and programming,
monitoring machine operations, verifying workpiece conformance, conducting tool changes, and
performing machine maintenance.
Job Responsibilities:
Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control
(CNC) machines.
- Machine set-up and programming.
- Observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and
adjusts machine controls as needed.
- Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications, using precision measuring
instruments.
- Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or
programmed control data.
- Tool changes.
- Perform and document machine tool capability studies.
- Ensures that machine settings and programs are adhered to during production as per the
Tool List and Cycle Time sheets.
- Perform regular machine maintenance.
- Must work in compliance to ISO 9001 procedures/Systems.
- Housekeeping and light maintenance of the quality assurance work areas.
- Refer to assembly drawings and diagrams to follow installation and calibration
procedures.
- Review tooling lists and tooling sequences sheets.
- Confirm dimensions of products using precise measurement tools such as micrometers,
calipers, dial indicators and angle finders.
- Analyze job production data such as production time, material consumption, and first
time right for each production area.
- Evaluate condition and reliability of production equipment.
- Evaluate adequacy of procedures for isolating root cause factors for production
deficiencies or decreased product quality.
- Discuss planning and implementation of process and production improvements with coworkers,
supervisors and managers.
Required Skills & Expertise:
- Red Seal Machinist or equivalent license, education and previous experience.
- Certification in engineering or manufacturing technology or in a related field is an asset.
- Minimum three years of Set-Up Technician experience in a machine shop, preferably a
high-volume environment.
- Able to modify CNC programs for Machining Centers, Lathes and Special Purpose
Machinery.
- Knowledge of ISO 9001, SPC, and related procedures.
- Use computer-assisted design, manufacturing and machining. Desired Characteristics
- Able to interact with co-workers such as equipment operators, quality control managers
and shop supervisors to share information on equipment modifications and defects.
- Able to work independently reviewing production processes and in a team as needed.
- Maintain current certifications and engage in continuous learning in order to keep up with
new developments in field.
