What is the opportunity?
We are seeking an experienced Technical Leader to lead a team responsible for a mission-critical FX settlement platform built on HP NonStop (Tandem) within Capital Markets at RBC. This system plays a central role in global capital markets operations, and we are actively modernizing it with APIs, microservices, and distributed data solutions.
This role is a unique blend of leadership, legacy stewardship, and modernization strategy. You will manage and mentor a team of engineers, ensure reliability of today’s operations, and drive forward the evolution of tomorrow’s architecture.
What will you do?
- Lead a development team supporting and enhancing the FX settlement platform
- Manage delivery of both legacy system enhancements and modernization initiatives
- Provide technical direction across COBOL, TAL, Enscribe, and modern technologies (Java, APIs, microservices)
- Collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure system reliability and alignment with global settlement requirements
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, building the next generation of NonStop and modernization expertise
- Oversee development practices, code reviews, and release processes to maintain high quality
- Shape the technical roadmap balancing stability, regulatory requirements, and innovation.
What do you need to succeed?
Must-haves:
- 8+ years of software development and engineering leadership experience
- Proven track record of managing development teams in financial services or capital markets
- Strong understanding of high-availability, mission-critical systems
- Experience with legacy technologies (COBOL, mainframe, HP NonStop/Tandem, or equivalent)
- Familiarity with modern architectures (Java, APIs, microservices, distributed data, cloud)
- Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Nice-to-Haves:
- FX, payments, or settlement operations experience
- Prior involvement in legacy-to-modernization initiatives
- Exposure to operational data stores (ODS), event-driven systems, or real-time payment rails.
