The opportunity:

Join the University of Manitoba as a Lab Animal Training Coordinator and play a vital role in advancing ethical and high-quality research. In this dynamic position, you will lead the development and delivery of our Animal User Training Program, ensuring that researchers, students, and animal care personnel are equipped with the knowledge and hands-on skills to meet Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) standards. From designing engaging online courses and practical wet labs to mentoring new researchers and supporting veterinary services, your work will directly impact the welfare of animals and the integrity of scientific discovery. The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Animal Health Technician Diploma required.
  • CALAS Registered Master Laboratory Animal Technician\preferred though CALAS Register Laboratory Animal Technician would be considered.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in the laboratory animal field/research environment is required.
  • Must be familiar with the guidelines, policies, and laws of the Canadian Council on Animal Care, The University of Manitoba, Province of Manitoba and Government of Canada relating to the use of animals in research, teaching and testing.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Technical procedures such as blood collection, gavage and dexterity at handling syringes, surgical instruments is required.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of anaesthetic machines and at monitoring animals under anesthetic is required.
  • Flexible and willing to accept new and variable responsibilities.
  • Organized and able to multi-task is required.
  • Ability to maintain composure and treat animals with compassion despite hectic work pace is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, research staff and animal care staff, with tact and diplomacy is required
  • Extremely high level of confidentiality required.
  • Restraining animals using proper technique for procedures and examination is preferred.
  • Detection and observation of abnormal situations in research animals is preferred.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
