Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Surgical & Perioperative Services, the Manager of Inpatient Surgery & Surgical Step-Down Unit (SSDU) is accountable for operations across both the inpatient surgical unit and the Surgical Step-Down Unit, balancing the needs of two distinct patient populations and levels of acuity. The manager is responsible for the co-ordination and direction of all patient care related activities within the area, in collaboration with physician leadership and division heads. All unit personnel assigned to the clinical area report directly to the manager with regards to patient care and staff issues.

The manager provides an environment that supports and advances professional practice. He/she leads the team in implementing evidence-based practices that are sensitive to limited resources within a patient centred care philosophy. He/she role models professional and organizational core competencies.

Qualifications

  • BScN or equivalent degree in a health discipline required
  • Master’s degree in business administration or health-related discipline preferred
  • Registered Health Professional – College of Nurses (Registered Nurse) or equivalent health profession
  • Minimum 3-5 years recent formal leadership experience required, preferably within a surgical or critical care setting
  • Minimum 5 years of acute care clinical experience required, preferably within a surgical setting
  • Clinical experience in critical care (level III or II) considered a strong asset
  • Demonstrated strong patient and customer focused philosophy in all interactions
  • Demonstrated excellence with interpersonal communication, coaching and team building skills that facilitate positive interactions among all members of the health care team
  • Demonstrated excellence in leadership competencies, including: change management, conflict resolution, project management, leading strategic projects, etc.
  • Must be able to influence leaders, foster relationships and hold people accountable to agree upon tasks.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manages day-to-day operations of the inpatient surgical and SSDU unit
  • Leads patient flow and demand–capacity optimization for both units, including daily huddles, admission/discharge coordination, and escalation protocol activation.
  • Ensure corporate strategies are adhered to, and using data-informed decision making and feedback mechanism to improve overall performance
  • Management of all aspects of the health human resources on the inpatient units, including but not limited to; ensuring an appropriate number of staff and skill sets exist to meet program needs and enhancing clinical excellence and practice within the unit
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary leaders and team members to achieve excellence in overall functioning of unit
  • Partners actively with surgical chiefs, anesthesia, PACU, ED, and critical care leadership on clinical pathway design and implementation.
  • Provide leadership and direction to staff to facilitate the alignment of individual performance goals with hospital and portfolio objectives.
  • Participates in surgical program planning and development. Monitors and evaluates departmental operations and develops, recommends, and implements changes in systems, policies, and procedures to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Participates in the development of the annual operating budget for the unit, including staff, equipment, supplies, and space, to ensure accountability and optimal use, in collaboration with facilities management and surgical chiefs.
  • Includes monitoring of unit-specific cost centres, supply utilization, and collaboration with Finance/Procurement on product standardization and resource stewardship.
  • Analyzes financial and statistical reports regularly to monitor performance and takes action to attain budgeted targets in collaboration with staff and physicians.
  • Uses data dashboards, benchmarking, and performance indicators to monitor quality, patient safety, and patient experience outcomes, and takes corrective action where needed.
  • Takes lead on projects – program and corporately as it related to the functioning and optimization of surgical services or inpatient unit
  • Develops and implements day-to-day operating policies, systems, and procedures for the unit to ensure organizational effectiveness, as required; encourages and acts on staff suggestions for improvements as appropriate.
  • Collaborates in the development of organizational policies and procedures as required.
  • Contributes to program and corporate initiatives that directly impact unit operations and outcomes.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and skills through participation and leadership in professional education, attendance at conferences and continuing education programs, and other related activities. Serves as a mentor and role model, providing guidance, assistance, and learning opportunities for staff.
  • Provides leadership in staff development and readiness for change, including onboarding, clinical education, and support for new technologies and practice changes.
  • Use process improvement strategies to identify areas for potential efficiencies and provide direction on implementation and achievement of perioperative efficiencies that are in line with the strategic direction of the program.
