This is a temporary, full-time position open to current students who will be returning to their studies once this work term is complete.

Joffre Nitrogen Operations is located approximately 15 minutes east of Red Deer.

Reporting to the Maintenance and Engineering Superintendent, this role will support Joffre Nitrogen Operations (JNO). Turn plant issues into clear problem statements, develop solution options, and produce constructible Engineering Work Packages (EWPs) that move safely and efficiently through Management of Change (MOC), small capital, and turnaround execution while collaborating with maintenance, inspection, operations, and corporate SMEs (Subject Matter Expert).

This role is located at Nutrien's Joffre, Alberta site and is not eligilble for remote work.

What you will do:

  • Define problem statements: Capture current state, constraints, risks, and success criteria; validate inputs from P&IDs, isometrics, datasheets, and condition-monitoring trends
  • Identify & evaluate solutions: Generate alternatives; assess risk/cost/schedule/constructability/reliability; recommend a preferred option with rationale
  • Produce EWPs: Scope/basis of design, marked-up P&IDs/isometrics, calcs (e.g., minimum required thickness, simple hydraulics/heat balance, nozzle/load checks), specs/datasheets, BOM, drawings/sketches, Inspection and Test Plan (ITP)/Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) notes, commissioning/PSSR (Pre-Start up and Safety Review)
  • Collaborate: Work with operations and maintenance teams to support project execution, ensuring safe, and efficient completion of engineering tasks
  • Participate in MOC: Draft/route changes, contribute to Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), update drawings/records, support PSSR, and closure
  • Support small capital projects: Provide class estimates/schedules, risk registers, vendor RFP/RFQs, construction work packages, and support field execution
  • Turnaround readiness & execution: Provide engineering support in scope development, cost estimating support readiness reviews, field execution support, and lessons learned
  • Asset integrity & reliability: Trend corrosion/inspection data, active role in Downtime reporting, Bad Actors, End of Life (EOL) and Safety Operating Limits (SOL) programs, and Pressure Equipment Integrity Management System, and translate findings/issues into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) notifications/work request

What you will bring:

  • Completed 3 years toward a Mechanical, Materials/Metallurgical, Chemical, or O&G/Petroleum Engineering undergrad (or equivalent)
  • Ability to read/interpret P&IDs, isometrics, PFDs, equipment datasheets, and drawings
  • Asset-intensive/process industry exposure an asset (ammonia/urea/nitric acid or refinery/petrochemical a plus)

Knowledge Areas:

  • Mechanical/Materials: Mechanics of materials, corrosion/damage mechanisms, welding/metallurgy, Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) basics; awareness of Fit for Service (FFS) concepts
  • Chemical/Process: Thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics; process safety/control fundamentals
  • O&G context: Common process equipment (pressure vessels, exchangers, rotating equipment, piping) and unit operations

Core Abilities:

  • Problem framing: Gather data/field observations and write clear problem statements with constraints and success criteria
  • Solution development: Generate and compare options (risk, cost, schedule) and recommend a path forward
  • Engineering Work Package (EWP) prep: Draft scopes, sketches/drawings, materials lists, estimates, and QA activities for low-medium complexity projects
  • Management of Change (MOC) support: Prepare MOC documentation, participate in hazard reviews, track actions, and close-out.
  • Small-capital project delivery (support): Assist with planning, equipment selection, construction/commissioning support, turnover, and as-built documentation
  • Safety & compliance: Apply site SHE procedures and relevant codes/standards in all tasks
  • Communication & tools: Document work clearly; use CMMS (e.g., SAP PM), Excel, and P&IDs to communicate with Operations and Maintenance

Skills:

  • Strong technical writing
