Senior Backend Engineer — Fintech
Location: Toronto, ON - 5 days on site, downtown Employment Type: Permanent Compensation: $150,000–$230,000, plus stock option perks Agilus is recruiting for a fast-growing Canadian fintech platform that is redefining how people manage major expenses such as rent, tuition, and insurance—turning everyday payments into opportunities to build credit, earn rewards, and improve financial flexibility. We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the core engineering team and help build the financial infrastructure powering millions of dollars in monthly transactions. This is a backend-focused role with high ownership, where you will design, scale, and support mission-critical systems in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
What You’ll Do
Build scalable backend services using NestJS and TypeScript on Google Cloud Platform Design and maintain ledger systems and financial data models using PostgreSQL and Cloud SQL Architect and optimize payment processing pipelines for high transaction volumes Integrate with financial APIs and payment processors while supporting PCI DSS compliance Develop resilient microservices using Pub/Sub for event-driven architecture Manage infrastructure as code using Terraform Own critical financial systems end to end, from design through production monitoring Collaborate with product, compliance, and engineering teams to deliver secure, compliant features What We’re Looking For 4+ years of backend engineering experience, including 2+ years in fintech, payments, or a related financial technology environment Strong proficiency with NestJS/Node.js, TypeScript, and PostgreSQL Experience with ledger systems, double-entry bookkeeping, or financial data modelling Proven ability to scale backend systems that support high transaction volumes Familiarity with GCP services such as Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Run Experience integrating financial APIs and working within regulatory or security frameworks such as PCI DSS or SOC 2 Nice-to-Haves Experience with Terraform and infrastructure automation Knowledge of real-time payment systems or instant settlement Background in high-growth fintech or startup environments Exposure to open banking or financial data aggregation Why Join?
