The Opportunity
The purpose of this position is to review, analyze, and evaluate new business and renewals to determine risk level by using different methods of investigation. Working within a team environment, the incumbent will provide calculations for policies, inspections, and support to our broker face. The incumbent must evaluate policies based on acceptability of risk with a focus of reducing claim exposure while promoting new business and retention for the company. The incumbent will be required to leverage their technical expertise in supporting both internal staff and external broker and agent partners.

How You Will Create An Impact
- Looked upon as a resource to the Claims Department on policy wording interpretation and application thereof
- Accountable for underwriting at all transaction levels including, New Business submissions, renewals, endorsements and inspection evaluations
- Reviews large losses and claims risks alerts and takes action, where necessary
- Supports the Product Specialist and participates, where necessary, in the review of existing and proposed product changes
- Support or lead, where required, the technical development of support staff within the underwriting department through training and mentorship
- Active working relationships with all functional units of the organization
- Significant breadth of industry contacts including, but not limited to, other Ontario farm mutuals to support competitive intelligence
What You Will Bring
- Completion of Post-Secondary Education
- Successful completion, pursuing industry related designations is an asset
- Great organizational skills and ability to multi task is required
- Thorough attention to detail is a must to ensure accuracy of policy documents
- Ability to perform moderate mathematical calculations is required
- Effective communication skills: verbal, non-verbal and written
- Sound morals, ethics and confidentiality with ability to develop trusting and effective working relationships with peers, employees and business partners
- Strong computer literacy, proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and internet navigation
The incumbent should have expertise in Automobile and Residential (Commercial Auto and/or Farm would be an asset) insurance. This includes:
- Efficiency in the use of Policy Administration Systems for all policy transactions
- Understanding of the broker distribution channel, the various tools utilized by the broker, and the process interaction between insurer and broker
- Working understanding of the financial statements and the correlation of the underwriting results through to the Balance Sheet impact
- Understanding of current precedent cases on wording interpretation and potential impacts to exposures assumed and the ability to share this with other staff
- Working knowledge of relevant regulations, including the Insurance Act
- Auto:
- Knowledge of all private passenger classes
- Knowledge of all miscellaneous vehicle types
- Awareness of all classes of commercial automobile underwriting, including farm classes
- Knowledge of reading and interpreting all relevant policy wordings, including the OAP, and most OPCF endorsements, including underwriting XS and Umbrella liability and application of more complex OPCF’s
Understanding of FSCO, as well as relevant regulations, including the Insurance Act
- Property:
- Strong knowledge of residential heating, electrical, roofing and plumbing
- Strong knowledge of underwriting all residential classes of business
- Working knowledge of all classes of Farm Insurance, requiring some support, if necessary, to underwrite farm risks with agri-entertainment
- Working knowledge of Commercial General Liability and commercial property risk management, specifically commercial exposures as it relates to farm insurance, requiring some support, if necessary, to underwrite farm risks with agri-entertainment
- Working knowledge of Commercial General Liability and commercial property risk management, specifically commercial exposures as it relates to farm insurance, requiring some support, if necessary, to underwrite farm risks with agri-entertainment
- Working knowledge in reading and interpreting all policy wordings relevant to residential and farm insurance. Requires some support in underwriting complex files with agri-commercial business, excess and umbrella liability
- A working knowledge of reinsurance products available to FMIC and the necessary process for cession as well as all restrictions of FMIC’s reinsurance treaty
- Capability to partner, where necessary, the inception and/or renewal of subscription policies with FMIC as a lead or follower subscriber
