Catholic Social Services is currently seeking a full-time Position , 40 hours per week, Child Care Worker in EDMONTON to join our Lurana Shelter. Providing excellent client-centered care, you are confident, thoughtful, and motivated to achieve success when supporting others in your community.
**This position has a weekly schedule of:**40 hours per week, full-time position, Tuesday – Friday 10am - 6pm and Saturday 8am - 4pm. Job application closing date: March 25, 2026.
Program Overview: The Lurana Shelter is a first stage shelter for women and children fleeing family violence. The Lurana Shelter employees provide safety as well as physical, psychological care to the clients during their stay.
The Child Care Worker provides a safe, violence-free environment for the children at the Lurana Shelter. The Child Care Worker also teaches & reinforces positive coping strategies, safety planning & appropriate expression of emotions through appropriate play.
Job Summary:
- Completes the Ages and Stages assessment for children at the shelter
- Provides play-based activities that stimulate and support children’s intellectual, physical, social, emotional and language development
- Is aware of risks and behavioral issues related to anger, isolation and fear
- Works with children one-on-one if required
- Follows all safety procedures (including the Child Protection Policy)
- Understands, supports, promotes, and adheres to the Agency’s vision, mission, values, and organizational ethics, and treat all persons with humility, compassion, and respect
- Presents as a positive and professional role model and ambassador for the Agency in interactions with clients, stakeholders, and the public. Maintains respectful personal boundaries
- Establishes and maintains respectful, collaborative working relationships with clients and their key stakeholders.
- Communicates effectively and respectfully in a professional manner with clients, both verbally and in writing. Actively listens to clients to understand their needs while being aware of and responding to non-verbal communication.
- Communicates effectively and respectfully in a professional and confidential manner with all Agency employees, and internal and external stakeholders
- Documents case notes and updates/maintains files and records data, ensuring the data is accurate and complete. Ensures appropriate and confidential handling and storage of client/Agency information and documentation in accordance to Agency policies and procedures
- Completes incident reports, serious occurrence reports and/or other administrative duties in a precise and timely manner as per Agency policy and procedures
- Follows all approved client support programs, routines, and treatment plans
- Completes and submits monthly documentation as per standard procedures on or before assigned due dates, such as signed employee time sheets, month-end progress report, case notes, mileage, cheque requisitions, etc.
- Attends and actively participates in scheduled team meetings. Supports team initiatives and helps to identify problems and suggest solutions
- Completes all required reports and statistics, such as Signs of Safety or Service Plans, in a timely and thorough manner
- Ensures toys are age appropriate and safe for use
- Ensures good hygiene standards are met
- Networks with local schools and the greater community to promote positive public relations
- Attends training/employee development programs as required
- Follows professional guidelines and Agency protocols in addressing conflict, critical incidents & serious occurrences
- Assists in maintaining building and equipment according to Agency standards
- Reports concerns to Team Leader
- Performs other related duties as required
What This Job Requires:
- Minimum of a Child Care Level III certification or equivalent
- Diploma in a Human Services’ discipline is an asset
- Additional relevant certifications or designations considered an asset
- Minimum of 2 years’ related professional experience working with children exposed to violence
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
The ideal candidate will have an organized and compassionate approach to the work, strong teamwork skills, a commitment to developing positive supporting relationships, and experience supporting vulnerable youth. Other qualifications include:
- Sound knowledge of the following techniques is required: crisis intervention, anger diffusion, conflict intervention and resolution
- High level of professionalism, confidentiality and diplomacy; with ability to manage sensitive and confidential information and comply with all regulatory requirements and Agency Privacy and Confidentiality policies and procedures
- High degree of resourcefulness and flexibility to adapt to changing needs of clients, circumstances, programs, and Agency
- Effective client-service attitude and commitment to providing exceptional client service and quality results with empathy and compassion
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Awareness of and sensitivity towards those with diverse needs
- Understanding and knowledge in trauma informed care
- Demonstrates professional problem solving, critical thinking and appropriate judgment skills
- Effective English-language communication skills, both verbal and written, to communicate, understand, comprehend, and comply with all job requirements
- Collaborative skills: willingness to work as a team member, consulting and sharing information with colleagues and community partners, and contributing to the development and evaluation of programs
- Effective interpersonal and conflict management skills to facilitate working effectively with wide range and number of people, including clients, Agency staff, and external stakeholders and resources
- Up-to-date knowledge of Agency policies and procedures, as well as relevant legislation, regulations, practice standards and practice guidelines
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
- Competent in working with applicable Microsoft Office suite programs
- Proficient in use of other Agency-assigned computer applications and databases
- Knowledgeable of community resources
- Ability and willingness to work various shifts (which may include days, evenings, and/or weekends) and overtime as required to meet client and Agency needs
- Ability and willingness to travel, as required, to different offices, programs, and other sites to attend meetings, presentations, and/or training
- Satisfactory Security Checks including Criminal Record Check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check (CIRC)
- Enrolment in the Agency Group Benefits plan as applicable
- Reliable vehicle and valid Class 5 driver’s license to travel to different offices, programs, and other sites
- Reliable vehicle and valid Class 5 driver’s license – requirement to transport clients in your personal vehicle
- Satisfactory driver’s abstract
- Valid vehicle registration
- Valid vehicle insurance with $2 million liability coverage
