The Opportunity We are currently seeking a Co-Op Student to join our Business Performance & Continuous Improvement Team in Toronto

This is a 8-12 month-fixed term co-op position starting in May, 2016. This posting is for an existing position vacancy.

As a Co-op student , you will have focus on the Continuous Improvement function, you will be interacting with cross-functional teams across Operations mining and processing plants and Corporate areas to support the implementation and knowledge share of Vale Base Metals Continuous Improvement. By integrating organizational structure, processes, technology, people and culture you will challenge your creative and analytical thinking to support safe and reliable operations while improving business performance.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • CI Fundamentals and Culture: learn concepts of Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement in the VPS Model; navigate and use the Continuous Improvement Portal (Kaizen, standardization, replications, regulations); know VPS guidelines and routines and their role in process stability.
  • Technical Development: conduct training of the Learning Journey in CI (basic/intermediate level); use Lean/CI tools such as 5S, PDCA, 5 Whys, Ishikawa, SIPOC and flow mapping; support analysis of performance deviations and identification of causes.
  • Participation in CI Projects and Routines: support Kaizen, PDCA, Lean Six Sigma or continuous improvement projects, following structured methodologies; participate in VPS routines: performance meetings, indicator analysis and follow-ups; map processes, collect data, monitor action plans and support implementations.
  • Standardization and Support: assist in the construction or revision of operational standards and process documents and Global systems; participate in post-implementation checks to ensure stability and no rework.
  • Collaboration and Interaction with Areas: participate in meetings with operational, administrative and performance areas; support the creation of reports, presentations and monitoring dashboards; carry out activities aligned with the practices performed in previous stages in Performance & CI.

About You Education:

  • Currently enrolled in BS/MS programs, preferably in a science-related discipline, engineering, business, economics or related areas

Skills:

  • Interests and/or experiences in the following:

  • Interest in data analytics and data visualization

  • Interest in Continuous Improvement methods

  • Interest in Project Management

  • Proficient with MS Excel, Word and PowerPoint and familiarity with Power BI and programming language.

  • Curiosity to learn, hands-on approach to execution and strong communication skills

  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and contribute to group problem-solving.

  • Portuguese speaking is an asset
