About the role

The Law Society of Alberta (Law Society) regulates the legal profession in the public interest.

In alignment with the Law Society’s vision, mission, and strategic plan, the Communications department provides strategic communications support in a variety of areas including stakeholder engagement, media relations, issues management, crisis communications, employee communications, brand management and communications tools management.

The Communications department provides strategic communications counsel to the Executive Leadership Team, the Board of Directors and all business units within the organization. The department also manages special events.

Reporting to the Manager, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement, the Communications Advisor develops, implements and evaluates communications strategies and plans for external and internal communications initiatives of the Law Society. This involves partnering with various business units and leadership to provide internal and external communications counsel to deliver targeted communications to Law Society stakeholders.

Success in this position requires excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills while remaining flexible and attentive to detail.

###Key Accountabilities:

As a member of the Communications team you will:

  • Develop and deliver communications strategies aligned with Law Society goals and objectives.
  • Oversee the publication of print and electronic publications.
  • Provide counsel on internal and external communications.
  • Manage company website and social media platforms.
  • Make informed decisions relative to processes and needs.
  • Partner with business unit leadership and staff to develop and deliver communications strategies which assist them in achieving their goals.
  • Provide support to Senior Advisors and the Manager of Communications in the implementation of communications strategies.
  • Plan, research, check facts, write articles and oversee the publication of print and electronic publications, as well as social media tools.
  • Write, edit and manage graphic design for internal and external communication using a variety of communication tools.
  • Develop content to keep the website, intranet and social media accounts relevant and engaging.
  • Manage and execute events for both staff and external stakeholders as required.
  • Plan, research, write and edit articles for various publications.
  • Oversee video / photo shoots as part of creating various internal and external communications publications; Video editing skills are an asset, but not required.
  • Work with other law societies and external stakeholders on shared communications activities, as required.
  • Act as backup to the Senior Communications Advisors as required.
  • Support the development and design of communications materials (postcards, brochures, programs), as required.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

###Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or similar field together with a minimum of 3-7 years of relevant communications experience.
  • Adobe InDesign and basic graphic design knowledge.
  • Exceptional writing skills and experience writing for a range of media, including newsletters, e-communication, websites and social media, targeting a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent verbal communications and presentation skills.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing communications strategies – including issues management and risk assessments.
  • Ability to quickly adapt to and understand the communications needs of a complex organization with multiple external and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong team player skills, with an ability to work with all business units.
  • Excellent attention to detail, while maintaining a big picture perspective.
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong computer skills, including but not limited to, Microsoft Office Suite and desktop publishing software.
  • Video / photo shooting and editing skills are an asset, but not required.
  • Self-starter, able to work with minimal supervision and independently take the lead on projects as required.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and respect at all times in accordance with a respectful workplace.
