About the role
Founding Full-Stack Engineer Ironbooks | AI Bookkeeping for the Trades | Remote (North American time zones)
The short version Ironbooks has built an AI-powered bookkeeping platform for trades contractors. We have over 100 paying customers, a professional bookkeeping team using it every day, and it is growing fast. The founder built the entire platform with AI coding tools, and it works. Now we need our first engineer to own it, harden it, and scale it from our first ~100 production clients to 1,000 and beyond. You harden the QuickBooks core we run on today, and you design the Plaid bank-data layer that takes the books from nightly syncs to real time. You would be our first engineering hire. You would own the platform. The founder built it, keeps shipping alongside you at first, and hands over the keys as you take root.
This is your opportunity to become a founding software engineer for a high-growth SaaS Fintech company.
What you would do Take over the codebase and make it stronger. Not rebuild it. Improve it. Own our number one priority: every number on a client's books is provably correct. A real example of the work: contractors' books routinely arrive with bank deposits coded straight into revenue on top of the invoices for the same jobs, quietly overstating income. We built a scanner and ran it across every client file within days. Finding and killing that class of problem is the job. Own the automation that writes to live QuickBooks ledgers every night: guardrails, idempotency, closed-period safety, and the verification score for every monthly close. The score runs in shadow mode today; you take it to enforced, so no statement ships below the bar. Build our Plaid layer from the ground up. Direct bank and card connections, reconciliation against actual bank truth in near real time, and eventually live cash-flow dashboards and forecasting for every contractor on the platform. This is the future of the product and it is yours to architect. Build the safety net an AI-built system needs at scale. Today that net barely exists: a handful of tests, no staging, migrations applied by hand. The job is to keep the shipping speed and add the net: tests on the money paths, staging, migrations, and monitoring that catches silent failures in minutes, not days. Ship fast with AI tools every day, the same way the product was built.
Who you are 2-4 years shipping production web apps, with at least one stretch as the primary or only owner of something real users depended on. Real users, real bugs, real 2am incidents. You live in Claude Code or Cursor. AI-assisted development is how you work, and you know how to verify what an agent gives you before it touches money. Full-stack and happy owning everything: frontend, backend, database, integrations, deploys, and the operational grunt work that keeps it all alive. You care about getting numbers right. If a dashboard shows a total that is off by 12%, that ruins your day until you know why. You would rather improve a working system than tear it down to feel comfortable. You love UI/UX and are happy to get on a call with a customer to get ideas and work through issues and ideas. Bonus: you know your way around a P&L, or you genuinely want to learn bookkeeping. Our hardest bugs are accounting bugs, and we will teach you the accounting.
Our stack Next.js, React, TypeScript, Supabase (Postgres), Vercel. Deep QuickBooks Online integration (OAuth, reports, live ledger writes), Stripe, Resend, and Anthropic-powered pipelines for categorization and reconciliation. Plaid is next, and you build it.
Who this is not for If your instinct with any inherited codebase is to rebuild it from scratch, this is not the role. If you have only worked at giant tech companies and never built something scrappy, this will feel uncomfortable. If you want to manage people and set process instead of writing code, keep looking. If AI coding tools feel like cheating or a threat to you, we are not your team.
Why this is a great seat We have amazing product-market fit. We have incredible unit economics. There are 6 million trades businesses in the US alone, and painting is just the first trade. A product a professional team depends on every day. Ground floor, meaningful equity, and you get to define how engineering works here.
The offer $120,000 to $180,000 base, depending on experience and location Up to 2% equity, 4-year vest with a standard 1-year cliff Remote, North American ONLY (no overseas) Final round is a short paid working session in our actual codebase, with AI tools, on a real bug. You will know exactly what the job is before you take it.
How to apply Email mike@paintergrowth.com with four things: Your resume, one system you inherited and made better without rewriting it, the AI tools you use every day and how you actually use them, and one bug you found where the number on the screen was wrong. Show us how you think.
