We are Edmonton’s Destination Management and Marketing Organization (DMMO). We also manage two of Edmonton’s award-winning venues, the Edmonton Convention Centre and the Edmonton EXPO Centre. We help tell Edmonton’s story, elevate the Edmonton experience, and drive inbound visitation and economic impact in the visitor economy.

Working together in a one-team approach aligned by our core values, Explore Edmonton’s business units’ market and sell Edmonton as a year-round destination to visit, work, and play in while also developing products and experiences that have a uniquely Edmonton flavour. And by incorporating the management of the city’s two award-winning venues into Explore Edmonton, we are uniquely positioned to attract major events, meetings, and conventions to our city, generating greater economic impact. While Explore Edmonton’s mandate is focused on generating inbound visitation, what we do and how we do it also enhances and amplifies the quality of life for Edmontonians. The Destination Development & MarketingStrategy Group is focused on driving sustainable year-round visitation through program and initiatives that positively impact Edmonton’s image and awareness in regional and international markets. More specifically on the destination development side, we help develop and showcase the amazing tourism experiences Edmonton has to offer visitors. We work closely with local businesses, ground operators, attractions, experience providers and festivals to help develop products and experiences that are authentic to Edmonton.

The sustainability team is committed to furthering explore Edmonton sustainable practises throughout its operations, and to exemplify our five organizational values and every step of their work. Together, they support the development of the visitor economy in Edmonton by connecting our ecological and cultural history with a future vision of our industry; focusing on how the visitor economy’s contribution can be maximized to benefit the lives and livelihoods of Edmontonians.

About the Position

In this dynamic role, you’ll collaborate with managers, employees, clients, and stakeholders to revolutionize our approach to sustainability. Your vision will help us minimize our environmental footprint while maximizing our positive social impact—making a real difference in our community and beyond!

As a key leader, you will drive innovative sustainability initiatives that align with Explore Edmonton’s vision, the Edmonton Regenerative Tourism Strategy, and the city's broader strategic goals. You’ll lead the development and implementation of these strategies, championing social and environmental efforts across the organization. By bridging communication across teams, you’ll translate complex sustainability concepts into practical, actionable solutions integrated into operations, events, and new business opportunities.

Your role will include:

  • Designing and executing impactful sustainability programs in areas such as climate resilience, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and community engagement.
  • Collaborating across departments and with external partners to enhance Edmonton’s reputation as a leading sustainable tourism destination.
  • Integrating sustainability into product development, event planning, and business growth opportunities.
  • Developing and monitoring KPIs to measure the success of programs and drive continuous improvement.
  • Leading sustainability reporting, including emissions tracking and reduction plans, in alignment with local and international standards.
  • Managing budgets and identifying funding opportunities, grants, and rebates to support sustainability initiatives.
  • Creating and delivering training programs to build internal capacity and ensure organization-wide adoption of best practices.
  • Engaging with government, community organizations, and industry stakeholders to advance sustainability goals and initiatives.
  • Mentoring and leading a high-performing team while fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and sustainability excellence.
  • Evaluating and refining policies, procedures, and operational practices to meet evolving sustainability goals and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5+ years of proven experience implementing social and environmental sustainability programs, require
  • 3-5 years of direct leadership experience required, with the ability to demonstrate proven track record leading a team with the ability to manage and motivate teams to achieve strategic goals and drive organizational success.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environment and Eco-Related studies, required. Master’s degree and professional certification in carbon measurement and management preferred.
  • Experience working in a corporate, business and management setting required.
  • Excellent and creative problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to analyze and understand research and to identify relevant and valuable information.
  • Must be able to navigate a variety of settings as needed to identify environmental sustainability issues and solutions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to create, interpret, and execute a budget.
  • Presentation skills required to deliver proposals to varying groups of individuals.
  • Thorough and current knowledge of sustainability practices, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Proven experience with environmental standards, including carbon measurement
  • Excellent communication skills, strong writing and public presentation skills.
  • Good consultation skills, active listener, service philosophy.
  • Project management background an asset.
  • Flexibility to work overtime where required with occasional business travel required.
