We are currently looking for 7 Inspector Trainees to join our Boiler and Pressure Vessels Program. Position Summary Inspector Trainees are represented by the Ontario Public Service Employee Union - OPSEU/SEFPO, Local 546. As an Inspector Trainee, you will be trained to provide safety management services to our industry customers and the public through on-site inspections. You will ensure compliance with codes, standards, safety bulletins, the Technical Standards & Safety Act and Regulations.

We are looking for individuals who are technically strong and have an eye for detail. Our inspectors are team players with excellent problem-solving skills.

For the first 12 months you will be provided with in-house training and job shadowing. You will participate in training sessions to prepare for the Ontario Certificate of Competency (C of C) exam, as well as the National Board 'IS' and 'AI' Commission exams. Successfully completing these will make you eligible for further training in preparation for the 'N' or 'R' Endorsement exams.

Mandatory Program Requirements This role requires travelling to work sites and the corporate office; therefore, a driver's license and access to a vehicle is a requirement. Licensing exams are written in the United States, and successful candidates will be required to travel to the United States to complete this program. Additionally, inspector trainees are required to visit sites that require security clearances; therefore, all candidates must be eligible to obtain the Basic Security Clearance.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare to write the National Board exams for IS and AI Commissions by proactively engaging with all course material, taking responsibility to learn and know the content, completing all assignments on time, and supporting your team members with their learning

  • Job shadow inspectors, as assigned, complying with all safety protocols, taking direction from the inspector, and observing and learning how the inspector applies the codes and standards

  • Perform full or partial inspector duties when under the guidance of an inspector or when authorized, including:

  • Conducting inspections of boiler and pressure vessel installations, as well as regular in-service inspections to ensure they meet safety standards. You’ll use your Certificate of Competency (CoC) as well as your “IS” and “AI” Commissions during your inspections.

  • Performing shop inspections – both conventional and nuclear – during the manufacturing of boilers and pressure vessels. With your “AI” Commission and “N” Endorsement, you’ll ensure these components are built to the highest safety and quality standards.

  • Inspecting repairs and alterations to boilers and pressure vessels to verify compliance with safety codes and regulations. You’ll carry out these inspections using your “R” Endorsement and apply your technical proficiency when conducting welder and brazer tests.

  • Develop progressive relationships with your internal and external customers to promote safety-oriented results.

Job Qualifications

  • Relevant college diploma in Engineering, Technology, Science, Mathematics, or Power Engineering is required
  • Must have at least one year of experience related to Engineering, Manufacturing, Welding, Quality Control Systems, Inspection, Non-destructive examination, or Operating Engineering.
  • A working knowledge of CSA and ASME BPV codes, the Technical Standards and Safety Act, and BPV Regulations will be an asset.
  • Strong track record of effective decision-making, time management, communication, and intermediate computer skills.
  • Other training, certification, or experience within the BPV industry (e.g. API-510, API-570, Certified Welding Inspector, welding, quality control, inspection) will be an asset.
  • Salary will be commiserated with education, licensing, and work experience in line with the Collective Agreement.
