About the role

Boarding Don – Senior School

Full-Time, One-Year Term with Potential for Renewal

Ashbury College is a leading not-for-profit independent day and boarding school for students in Grades 4 to 12 located in Canada’s capital and the traditional, unceded territory of the Anishinàbe Algonquin Nation. We serve a diverse community of over 60 nationalities from around the National Capital Region, the diplomatic community and international and domestic boarding students.

Our mission is to inspire students in a dynamic learning environment as intellectually curious, compassionate and responsible global citizens. Our strategic direction is centered on the highest standards in teaching and learning; whole student development; access and inclusion in our pluralistic community; community engagement; and resource stewardship for long term-sustainability. We achieve these through a community of employees, volunteers, and students who cultivate and celebrate diversity and inclusion.

We strongly encourage applications from all qualified individuals who are members of groups with historical and/or current barriers to equity. This supports our mission, makes our community stronger, and adds to our Boarding program and full school community culture.

Based in central Ottawa, Ashbury College is currently seeking a Boarding Don for our Boarding Residences to contribute to the overall quality of the school and boarding life for Canadian and International students.

Working in tandem with the Head of House Boarding and team of Boarding Dons, our student services group, and other faculty, you will actively contribute to the ongoing success of our boarding students.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing for the care and well-being of boarding students during scheduled weekday and weekend periods, and occasional assigned holiday dates.
  • Supervising the ongoing activities of boarding students, planning and supervising weekend and special events, supporting co-curriculars, attending weekly house and boarding staff meetings.
  • Creating a sense of belonging for all students by encouraging them to recognize, respect and celebrate their diversity of voices, experiences, and identities in boarding and across the school community
  • Supporting and promoting different worldviews including Indigenous, local, and global perspectives.
  • Modeling Ashbury College’s values of Academic Excellence and Personal Growth, Pluralism and International Engagement and Stewardship and Service.

Experience leading educational or recreational programs is required, as is a history of adding to the full life of the school and/or other congregate living settings, where you have worked and/or volunteered. This experience must include supporting the personal growth of youth with diverse backgrounds and interests, through ensuring a safe and respectful environment.

A Bachelor of Education degree and Ontario College of Teachers’ certification is preferred. Fluency in a second language is an asset. If you are a certified teacher, you may be provided with up to 2 regular courses to teach - based on your teachables and course availability - and provided with on-call teaching opportunities.

As you will need to be accessible to and provide ongoing support to boarding students, you are expected to reside in a self-contained apartment in one of our three boarding facilities. Room and Board is included during the academic year, with the expectation that you dine with our Boarding students during your scheduled supervisory shifts. All Ashbury boarding facilities are modern, hotel or home-modeled facilities.

If you are passionate about guiding and supporting youth, encouraging their curiosity and confidence, and instilling in them an enthusiasm for learning, we want to hear from you.

Ashbury College provides a competitive compensation and benefits package, including participation in the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan where eligible. And, if you are not familiar with our modern facilities, dynamic community, high academic standards, or wealth of varied co-curricular activities, please visit our website at ashbury.ca.

This appointment is effective starting late August 2026, and is a full-time one-year term, with the potential for renewal.

This posting will close on January 23rd, 2026, and applications should be forwarded on or before that date. Only short-listed applicants will be contacted.

We welcome applications from qualified individuals of all backgrounds, including those from groups that have faced historical and/or systemic barriers to equity. Joining Ashbury means contributing to a dynamic learning environment where your unique perspectives and experiences help shape a more inclusive future.

If we contact you about an employment opportunity and you require an accommodation, we will work with you to meet your needs.

The compensation for this position is $32,000/annum. This amount may be supplemented with additional teaching duties.
