Role Overview

Reporting to the North America Regional Director Environment, the Regional Manager, Environmental Sciences is responsible for advancing our technical understanding of environmental challenges/opportunities and developing strategic plans that minimize risk across our assets while meeting compliance requirements, commitments with Indigenous Government Organizations, and performance targets.

The successful candidate will provide outstanding leadership, scientific knowledge and practical experience in environmental areas pertinent to mining. The Regional Manager, Environmental Sciences must be self-motivated, collaborate well across diverse teams, have strong organizational skills, and robust technical understanding of environmental disciplines. This role is crucial for advancing our environmental performance and sustainable mining practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Foster a team culture of inclusivity and collaboration through mentorship, empowerment, and engagement
  • Build and maintain effective relationships across the North American portfolio and enterprise teams, and with government representatives, regulators, Indigenous communities, communities of interest, and environmental organizations
  • Advise on management decisions and regulatory approvals related to environmental disciplines through robust technical expertise and sound knowledge of applicable commitments, permits, and associated requirements
  • Identify key risks, issues, and opportunities related to advancement of Teck’s business strategy, including the strategic direction for compliance and regulatory approvals associated with operations, projects, and legacy properties
  • Provide technical, regulatory, and strategic oversight into environmental-related challenges and opportunities including, but not limited, water quality, toxicology, fisheries, spill and waste management, air quality, etc.
  • Develop and support strategies for environmental management across North American assets
  • Lead and support negotiations with government, regulatory agencies, Indigenous government organizations, and lease holders on conditions, commitments, agreements, and mitigation actions
  • Provide leadership and technical expertise in the development and maintenance of robust monitoring programs that meet business needs, regulatory requirements and commitments
  • Technical review and direction on fulfilling reporting requirements internally and externally
  • Ensure annual budgeting and scheduling meet business commitments
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to team members, fostering their professional development and ensuring the team is functioning effectively to deliver environmental objectives
  • Supports required training and capacity building with Operations as required to effectively apply relevant guidelines, procedures, and standards.
  • Remains current on environmental issues that have the potential to impact Teck’s reputation and sustainability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an environmental-related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio.) preferred
  • 10+ years of experience providing leadership in environmental sciences, compliance, and risk management in mining or other natural resource industry
  • Well versed in provincial and federal legislation and regulatory requirements applicable to mining activities
  • Advanced written, verbal and interpersonal communications and presentation skills in both formal and informal settings with the ability to build and maintain relationships with government officials, Indigenous groups, and communities of interest
  • Technical understanding of environmental sciences, risk evaluation, and compliance practices related to water quality/quantity, toxicology, fisheries, air quality, waste management, ecological or human health risk assessments, biodiversity, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with and build relationships with people at all levels of the organization to influence outcomes and manage conflict
  • Strong leadership and management skills including ability to manage a technically-diverse staff and consultants to effectively leverage skillsets and provide additional support where necessary
  • Motivated self-starter who can manage several projects simultaneously and adapt to changing situations
  • Ability to travel approximately 30% on average annually
  • High degree of critical thinking and analytical skills with strong technical writing skills and understanding of environmental disciplines
  • Deliver with a “fit-for-purpose” approach focusing on the key levers or inputs that have a material impact on positive outcomes and results

Pay Range: $147,000 - $182,000

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
