About Us

The Department of Geography and Environment is a diverse academic department delivering both undergraduate and graduate programs. Many of the full-time faculty members are active researchers with external grant support from government, industry and/or private foundations. The research areas consist of 4 clusters: physical geography; environment, development and health geography; urban studies, and; Geographic Information Science (GIS). The department also houses the Cartography section that produces materials for individuals within the department, throughout Western and broader community.

Responsibilities

As a Technical/ Research Support 1, you will participate as a core team member in the CIHR-Funded “E-Prevention and Vaping (EPAV): Mobilizing youth-generated evidence to co-produce a digital e-cigarette intervention” research study under the direction of Principal Investigators Dr Stephanie Coen (UWO), Dr Laura Struik, (UBCO) and Dr Gina Martin (UAthabasca) and Co-Investigator/Research Scientist Dr Kendra Nelson Ferguson (UWO). The purpose of this study is to move evidence into action so that vaping prevention efforts resonate with youth and are derived from, and embedded within, youth cultures and socio-environmental contexts.

WORK PERFORMED

Assists the research team with the EPAV research project:

  • Generating content (co-developing recruitment material, data collection tools, etc.).
  • Co-leading in-person and online data collection (e.g., workshop sessions, focus groups, interviews).
  • Developing youth-friendly knowledge translation pieces for research evidence.
  • Engagement in meetings and the “Prevention & Policy Summit”.
  • Performing other related duties as required (i.e., activity plans, outcomes, desired outputs, etc.).

WORK LOCATION

This role will require both in-person and online engagement.

EDUCATION/WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Undergraduate Degree in a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years experience
  • Completion of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans Course on Research Ethics (TCPS 2: CORE) certificate.
  • Previous member of the HEAL Youth Advisory Council (HEALYAC).
  • Prior involvement with the Teens Talk Vaping project.

KEY SKILLS

  • Effective oral and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Internet skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities, to multi-task and to meet deadlines.
  • Effective time management skills, commitment, and reliability.
  • Competent at maintaining research participant confidentiality, working with confidential data, and following data security protocols.
  • Commitment to equity-centered approaches to health.
  • Ability to work from a non-judgmental and empathetic perspective when interacting with others with diverse lived experiences.
  • Skilled in qualitative research methods.
